Root Goodbye TouchWiz

Yeah sorry I suppose I should have been more detailed and precise in my wording in the OP.
One day in this is definitely a smoother operation. Im not kidding the quickness of replacing the dock apps from app list is worth it alone. Before it would take like 15 seconds for that list to pop up and now its automatic.

**Please note** even though I/we copy and paste from data/app once pasted in system/app it no longer resides in data/app. Why is that significant? When updates to LP come out you cannot update since the file/folder is not in data/app so you will have to manually DL a new apk and then re-paste in system/app. Its a bit of extra work but worth it from my standpoint

2 Questions

1: When you manually copy and paste the update to ADW or LP or whichever launcher one uses, does RE prompt you to replace the file with the same name? In other words, you use the exact same process as listed in this thread and then the outdated file is automatically replaced. No need to get rid of it or any extra steps?

2: How are most people tracking updates to the 3rd party launchers? Just checking appbrain every now and again? Subscribing to the RS feeds of the developers? Just curious.

When you copy the launcher from data/app you just paste it into system/app there is no renaming of it (if you are on dj05 you ll have to set system/app to r/w first).....then rename or delete touchwizlauncher...,you ll get immediate force closes so power off or battery pull then reboot and ur fine

Launchers are almost always updated in the market....just update that way

nitsu, I think peter's asking if your launcher gets update from market, it goes to data/app, and when he copys the updated file from data/app to system/app (which has pre-updated version), RE replaces the old one with updated new one?
or you need to rename the files if RE lacks the ability to replace files that have same name to newer one.

I'm curious about it, too :)

I just got rid of TW, too!

set system/app as r/w
copied org.adwfreak.launcher.apk in data/app
pasted that apk in system/app
renamed touchwiz30launcher.apk to .old extension
FC loop happened and reboot
reloaded beautiful widget and poweramp widget

I forgot to check my RAM usage before remove TW, but I'm having 250mb average now.
I hope it gives me better battery life :)
working good so far!

If it has the same name it should copy.right over...,i've actually never done it though as i seemingly wipe.data 3 or more times a week....so i might not be the best person to answer this question.

Hey guys, came across this thread last night while just doing searching/reading. This thread made me go ahead and root my Fascinate. I also went ahead and then copied over LauncherPro and ADW EX to the system/app folder. I've been trying to experiment with each, but it seems like so far LauncherPro in the end seems to be the better replacement. Any launcher just by itself seems to be good, but it seems to me that overall LauncherPro is using less ram than ADW EX. I'm torn between using the two, but I'm sticking more with LP because of the Plus version's widgets.

Like was mentioned my phone is almost instant now when you'd go to add a new application from a long homescreen press or going to change the function of one of the icons in the dock how the app list to select from does come up almost instantly. Plus everything else on the phone seems smoother. Even the boot up.

Have any of you guys kept an eye on RAM usage with the different launchers and seen if one is better than the other?

Now I'm debating going on over and updating to DJ05 to help make the GPS a bit better and turn the Fascinate into a perfect phone for me.

Glad things are running better for you...but don't make decisions based on ram for anything...android is a linux based os that handles memory differently than a windows computer. :)

Simply out of curiosity: What happens to the wallpaper that is usually an available option when editing my homescreens? After getting rid of touchwiz, they disappeared. Even the ones that came with Super Clean. Now I can only use the ADW one, live wallpaper, or go to the gallery. Can I find them with RE?

Those are the system wallpapers built into touchwiz....getting rid of the launcher gets rid of them...,you can extract them before ditching touchwiz....but personally you might be better of downloading zedge from the market...,it has thousands of wallpapers for free and its where many of us get ours from. :)
