Root Will Custom ROMs always be "better"?

The *stock* ROM had two very big, glaring bugs for me:

1) Bluetooth pairing would have to be done *every time* I got in my car. The stock ROM could not connect a second time without going through pairing.

2) Connection to my home wifi (unsecured & open) required a power cycle. I'd get home, the phone would see the network, but couldn't get an IP. I'd power cycle the phone and then it'd work.

I have never had either of those two problems with the ROMs I've tried. And that's been:

Cognition 2.3b6
Axura 2.4 & 2.5
Phoenix 1.5 & 2.0
Assonance 5.0

Well, I'll have to take back one. I've just flashed Phoenix 2.0 and haven't had a chance to test it. But I'm not worried at all that it'll work fine, just like the others.

I agree those would be annoying, but I'm not sure they're "bugs" as they don't seem to be very common. I know personally I don't have to re-pair my bluetooth headset each time I get in my car, and my wifi works as soon as I enter the house without having to reboot the Captivate.

It's good that the alternative ROMs provided you with a solution, though.

I like smrerick because he's a "check" on people jumping into the pool without doing swimming lessons first.

And people think I'm totally against hacking and flashing custom ROMs. :) I'm not.

One thing I'll mention is this... that once AT&T releases the official 2.2 version, the custom rom builders are probably going to incorporate it into their software.

Yes, I have high hopes for this too. It should alleviate a number of the annoying issues that result from the i9000 having different hardware. Hopefully the ROM devs can take the final official 2.2 Captivate ROM and then apply the same enhancements and improvements they've been applying to the i9000 ROMs.

I highly doubt we are gonna have 2.2.1...it will be 2.2..then again we have to wait for 2.2.1...also samsung is busy is making new phones like some new 4g phone running 2.2, they announced in CES 2011...for us they have thier golden excuse "we want it stable, so we are still testing it"...i mean samsung is not such a small company, they could not come up with stable 2.2 in so many months? it doesnt make sense to me...HTC and motorola has rolled out 2.2.1 so quickly, they will be running 2.3 or 2.4 (rumored) by the time we get official 2.2

So yeah custom roms will always be better..

I'm not so certain about this. I am pretty sure that if we get 2.2, that it will actually be 2.2.1. There is also still the chance (although minute) that they're going to jump straight to 2.3, not only for logical reasons (it's out already, and the Nexus S is almost identical) but as an attempt to gain points back from all the ticked-off Captivate owners. I know of some people who work at AT&T who discuss and think this (unofficially, of course). But I'm not going to bet on it.

This is one of the reasons I think a lot of the blame in the delay rests on AT&T, as they are the different variable here between the Galaxy S devices with Froyo, and those without.

I got really pissed when I saw awesome phone announced on ATT for first quarter release...damn it...now ATT is really gearing up for Android....all three newly announced phone from samsung, motorola and hTC comes with 2.2 and front facing camera...bigger screen...over clocked processer.....

also ironically that infuge 4g will be released soon on att and it have 2.2.....its also an variant of galaxy s with bigger screen and over clocked processer...

sowho to blame for our galaxy s...samsung (who already updated all international and canada phones with 2.2) or ATT (who is releasing 2.2 phones now)
