2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

From all the posts on this forum it's obvious that Kies mini is very flakey - way too many are having difficulty utilizing it. Hopefully when AT&T finally releases the froyo update it will also provide an updated version of Kies mini that addresses all the current problems, or better yet, provide an updated version of the full Kies that the rest of the world (except North America) enjoys. That program offers many more features other than the update only Kies mini.

If AT&T releases froyo with the current Kies mini they had better hire a bunch more customer service reps to handle the problem calls they're going to get.

that would be good... or it could just push it over the air. Save everyone trouble and everyone would have it. It's sent by AT&T too, so it won't use any data for those on a limited data plan.

Can you tell me if this is the correct sequence for upgrading Serendipity 4.1 to 4.2.1 please?

I'm currently running Serendipity 4.1 on my ATT Captivate.

1) Copy 4.1_to_4.2.zip to the phone's sd card
2) Reboot the phone into recovery mode
3) Scroll to "install zip from sd card" and use the power button to select
4) Scroll to "choose zip from sd card" and use the power button to select
5) Select the 4.1_to_4.2.zip file/rom and install it
6) Reboot

Thanks!

Almost complete. Once loaded scroll down to "go back" (I tghink you have to do this twice) Then Reboot system now. So:

1) Copy 4.1_to_4.2.zip to the phone's sd card
2) Reboot the phone into recovery mode
3) Scroll to "install zip from sd card" and use the power button to select
4) Scroll to "choose zip from sd card" and use the power button to select
5) Select the 4.1_to_4.2.zip file/rom and install it
6) Go back (down at bottom of list) I think you have to do this twice.
6) Reboot system now

To be exact:)

I can get kies mini to work on my windows 7 64 bit machine but for the life of my i cannot get the correct drivers for it to see my phone no matter what guide I follow or what I do even debugging mode. The thing that really pisses me off is that my girlfriend has the samsung vibrant (the galaxy s for t mobile) and all I have to do is to plug hers in and it automatically installs the drivers and there is no problem whatsoever.

Interestingly enough I asked this question on XDA, (phone rooted and running Phoenix 4.1 ROM)as follows:

Can I get Kies to work w/ this? I am using a Captivate i897 but I'm guessing the phone doesn't see it as that anymore. After all the boot screen shows i9000. What are the steps I need to use to get in here?

The answer was as such:

Check your product code using sgs tools, under secret codes. If it does not end in kaat that is your problem. It can be fixed but it is a hastle.

I haven't done this but I received a few more comments confirming this as the solution

Weird.... I have it running goog on my Vista x64 pc and just bought a new laptop yesterday.... Windows 7 Home Premium.
DL'd Kies mini.... installed it.... then plugged in the phone and have it set to auto into Kies..... 3 drivers loaded automatically then Opened Kies.....Kies then updated..... then it connected straight up..... I have no issues what so ever....
I'm not rooted and am using stock 2.1. I just make sure that I'm using the stock launcher before connecting.

yea, that seems to be. I figure, samsung finally brought the 2.2 to Galaxy S in america and t-mobile is releasing it. so why not at&t?

i'm thinking sprint, verizon and at&t all have froyo but they have to add on their bloatware. I just used kies mini to update my brothers vibrant. Seen alot of different colorful features on it. Plus he was able to download adobe 10.1 from the market.

It turns out that the problem was that I was using the front usb on my computer instead of the back ones so now its working, I've never ran into a problem with that before this.

So am I the only one who was able to install Kies mini on Windows 7 64-bit without any problems whatsoever? It just worked for me, I must have been really lucky there :p

Sometimes Kies mini works on my Win 7 64 bit and sometimes it doesn't. When Kies doesn't "wake up" and recognize my phone, I delete the program and reinstall it. Then it usually recognizes my phone and says that it has the latest software. This may work for software update checks several times, but in the last 2-3 months I've reinstalled Kies 3 or 4 times. I think the stability of the program is marginal at best, and it seems many others have had the same experience.

BTW, when I first got the Captivate in early August I installed the full version of Kies as used in Europe, and it worked perfectly. Nice tool for transferring files, photos, video, etc. I'd like to see Samsung provide the US with an updated version of the full Kies program when they release froyo.

No theyd rather stay with what they hate so they can torture us by whining endlessly on this message board.

Call it whining if you want... I call it as I see it. AT&T simply needs to step up and give us what we want and have been waiting on since the phone was put on the market. They've fixed nothing that they claim... in fact, their 'fix' broke my camera zoom.

I have been using kies also on my 64 bit machine and it works fine.
But i also assembled my computer, so no need for driver support from hp or dell :D

I built my own 64 bit computer as well, but no version of Kies, whether it be the full or mini, would go past the select language screen (for the installation) about 9/10 times. I put it on one of my custom rigs that was running 32-bit and it actually installed perfectly the first time, and has been working perfectly since.

I guess it really is just luck when it comes down to kies in a 64bit computer.

See my post above. It may not be ready. Do you want something that may break something else?

Are people still going to complain when Froyo is released and start in on wanting Gingerbread next?

Patience is a virtue.

Really, I couldn't care less about gingerbread. The main reason why I want froyo is mainly because of the extended battery life. And partially due to the fact that the full 512mb of RAM is finally being used.

Other than that, I feel that 2.1 is a fine OS. I'm just upset that I can't use my phone for more than 1 day if I don't charge, unless I don't touch it at all.
