Root Rooting the Droid without rsd lite up to and including FRG83D

Weird, I am getting a " "adb" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

I'm in the right directory, tried it in a few directories (unzipping to new dir) to no avail.

Suggestions?

Oh um...hello

...

Might want to update the original post with this little important piece of information I finally found, seeing as it is pretty essential and bugged the crap out of me because I followed along perfectly

UPDATE: If it says adb not found or something similar, download the ADB files and extract them into the Tools folder of the SDK (they were taken out by Google in the R08 version for some reason and need to be put back).

Thanks to everyone here for continuing to update things!

This was asked several times earlier in this forum, but since that time Froyo has come along, and the other messages seem pretty dated. I'm an extreme r00t n00b, so a couple of questions:

If I want to unroot after using this method and having Froyo, how do I do that?

Once rooted, will my Droid1 automatically have a CPU overclock app on it or do I need to download something?

If I'm not planning to flash a new ROM, other than overclocking and doing a full system backup, are there any other advantages to being rooted?

Thanks in advance!

1) Use this guide to unroot- http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/136508-guide-all-things-root-related.html

2) Some ROMs have built in OCing, but I highly suggest purchasing SetCPU from the market. It is a couple bucks, but highly worth it. You have OCing plus profiles that allow you to set different clock speeds depending on different scenarios.

3) The biggest advantage is custom ROMs, but there are many other advantages as well. You do not have to flash a custom ROM. You can use Cache Mate to easily clear app cache and Titanium Backup to backup all apps+data and system data, such as gmail accounts, settings, etc. If you don't like something such as your battery icon, you can easily change it.

Just keep in mind that there are risks to rooting as well.

Ok guys and gals,

I'm taking the plunge and trying this.

Everything is fine until step 10. When I try the enter the chmod command (yes, exactly like it says) I get: No such file or directory.

Any ideas.
Sorry to hear this, after your PM I searched this thread and found this same problem and it seemed as though the guy had fixed it, starting here (the link below is for a specific place in this thread):

http://androidforums.com/droid-all-...d-lite-up-including-frg83d-3.html#post1711802

but I am not sure if the solution posted by OMJ was the solution as the other poster didn't elaborate on his "rookie mistake". Also, just for kicks, if you did use the whole command, it might not hurt to post the whole output like KSutherland did so everyone is sure of exactly what you did.

good luck

Is that something included in a custom ROM, or are there apps to do that sort of thing?

For your question regarding un-rooting, the thread I linked you too earlier tells you how to do that. It's listed as something like: reverting to stock... Or something like that.

You can do that with metamorph, an app in the market. There is a website, though I cannot remember the exact url, that has all kinds of framework edits available for download. Ninjamorph can do the same thing, but I don't know much about that one.

Just remember to make a full nandroid backup before making any changes to your system. And always keep a backup of a clean install of any rom handy.

One more question: I was going to do a nandroid backup today (post-rooting), but when I booted into Recovery mode, there was no "backup/restore" option available. Only:

- Reboot system now
- Apply sdcard: update.zip
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- wipe baseband data

What do I do now?

You are still on the stock recovery. You need to flash either clockworkmod recovery or SPRecovery. Both are available in rom manager

I Just got my replacement droid on warranty. I rooted my old Droid that was on FRG22D and was glad to see that I could still use this method to root. I rebooted my device after checking my app tray to see My SuperUser icon was there and now all I get is this when I reboot:

Bootloader
2C.7C

Battery OK
OK to Program
Transfer Mode:
USB

Did something go horribly wrong?

UPDATE: I've had my phone since April 2010 and have never seen this before... ever. I have gotten my phone to boot, but I guess I can't boot my phone while it's connected to USB anymore. I have to unplug it before turning it back on.

Anyone else notice this?

I used this method on my own Droid some time ago. Finally decided to root my wife's Droid which is on FRG83D. I am stuck at step 13. Basically, I am not getting a '#' prompt (if my limited linux knowledge if right, it means I don't have su rights). Thus, the rest of steps won't work.

What am I missing? Steps seems plenty simple. I even tried running through them again, same issue.

EDIT:

And........................... nevermind.

After several attempts, it just.... worked. Alrighty then...

With my phone being on FRG83D, I opted to root with SuperOneClick on Friday, and I played around with the options root gave me (overclock, wifi tethering, etc), but I smashed my phone's display on saturday morning. So, after waiting so long to take the plunge, I have to revert back to stock before I send it in.

Now, I know that SuperOneClick has an unroot option, but in case that doesn't work, I'm curious as to the best way to revert back to stock.

I saw the link above on how to do this, but this is using RSDLite. Being this is how to root without RSD Lite, I thought I would see something a little more specific.

I have also seen the option of flashing an Unrooted stock option via Rom Manager, but this (from what I have read) has had mixed results. Could I just use the same method of manually updating to FG83D, flashing the update.zip file?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Okay, so Im a noob with rooting, but i understand most of whats going on. One problem Im running into though is that when I do steps 16 and 17
(adb push c:\droidroot\Superuser.apk /system/app
adb push c:\droidroot\su /system/bin)
I get the error:
failed to copy 'c:\droidroot\Superuser.apk' to '/system/app/Superuser.apk' : Read-only file system.
Same thing for the \su

Anyone know whats going on with this? Thanks a lot
