Ok so just as the title says. Now I havent owned a phone in over 5 years I was wondering is there any real way about removing / nuking apps like boingo and myextras?. (Do I need to root the phone?) (Do I have to be a neo from the matrix just to get this done?) Ive installed a few apps such as Android Mate / Root Explorer. And they all seem to tell me they cannot remove the file. Root explorer will not mount as RW and android mate just says it cant delete the file because its read only. The version of android that came with my phone by default is a 2.2.1 I havent done much but run out of internal space :( so ive got 30megs of space to play with

Now im willing to go any easy route to do this. If I have to jump on my pc so be it. If i have to get my phone and dial in for aliens i'll do that too. If anyone has a exact write up a step by step tutorial I should be looking at im all ears. If this is a re-post, My bad just point a newbie in the right direction :)

Thanks

Don't expect a lot of space from deleting the bloat. It is only a few MB. If you are running out of space, this is not going to be your answer. Remove bloat so that you can disable it always running. If that is not frustrating you, then maybe you don't need to remove anything. There is one app that can free about 10MB, but I do not recommend removing it. It is Think Free Office. I say keep it, because it is very useful.

Have you moved everything to SD that you can? Check the size of your apps to see what is causing the most size use. You say you have installed a few apps and are almost out of space. I have installed many and still have over 40MB, so maybe there is an app in particular that is taking too much space. Check the browser in particular because it can be a hog. I switched to Dolphin because it is much smaller and can cache to the SD card. It grows in size while running, but goes back to around 2MB when closed.

As Darnell said above, the only way to get rid of the bloatware(like the super annoying boingo WiFi app) is to root the phone.

2.2.1 can and has been successfully rooted, all you need to do is follow the guide step by step. The BEST thing to do is EDUCATE YOURSELF FULLY before attempting to root with 2.2.1

I'm not trying to scare you into not doing it, just make sure you fully understand everything before you do. There are no dumb questions and there are many helpful people(including myself) that will be glad to answer any you have or help you in any way.

And once you're rooted, one option to look into is acquiring Titanium Backup. This way you don't necessarily have to delete apps. It has the ability to disable apps including system apps without removing them from the phone. It's useful if you need to hard reset in the future and don't want to do all the tricks to re-install system apps. It's also a great backup utility.

I took a dive in the deep end of the pool and im rooted and im removing all this crappy crapware =). Trust me ive built 3 watercooled pc's 10 years ago. so overclocking and hacking is fun. I was worried there was more bickering about rooting the impossible but rest asure you can r00t a stock 2.2.1 :) as i bought mine in march 2011

A list of safe apps exists in these forums; I think it's in the sticky at the top. You can use that to ensure you don't delete necessary files. I would advise using the TeamChickenEater ROM and wait for a decent ROM that will allow you to overclock your phone using set CPU.

You can overclock on 2.2. I think you can flash ROM Zero Final II on a 2.2.1 Rooted, but you'll have to look in the "All Things Root" section. The link is above the sticky, in the negative space.

With your rooted device, you can do much. I would also advise you to (1) adjust the LCD density to 140, (2) set your SD card cache to 2304, (3) get autostarts and disable much autostart crap, and (4) get MinFreeManager and see how it works for you.

Also, you can also use Launcher Pro to create great GUIs. You'll need ADW running in the background so the LCD density changer software will work well--in my experience. I am trying to work with asadullah to edit the build.prop and see if I can do it without ADW and the LCD Density app.
