I got 3g on my lg optimus m.... Yea

i only see it for seconds at a time, never long enough to really try it. I somehow got a speed test on it but only once and I don't know how I caught it, because I think the network switched to 1x in the middle of the test lol. meh.

2.2.2 is available if you want through the upgrading software that LG has available on their website, but nobody's figured out how to root it yet.

Only thing is, I read (but didn't verify elsewhere) that virgin mobile won't accept outside phones on to their network, so if that's true, you may be forced to buy another handset anyway.

I'm thinking in the future, I wanna go to GSM whenever I decide to switch carriers (not anytime soon). At least I'll have the freedom to switch carriers while keeping the same handset, and I think still get all the data/etc. *shrugs*

GSM phones are also locked to the carrier. However, you can find out on the internet how to unlock the phone so it can be used on other carriers.

That's what I understood--that all you need is an unlock code for the phone, and you can put any sim card in there you want, or put your sim card in any other phone you want, and so on.

Beyond that, is it true that with GSM, since that's all that's required, that when you switch a phone to another carrier, there are no problems with getting full functionality with data and what not?

Conversely, is it true that with CDMA, if you flash the phone to another carrier, you have a high likelihood of NOT having full functionality, i.e. just maybe 1x if at all, and just calls and maybe texts otherwise?

I do know that you can put your sim card into any phone. As an example;
I took my AT&T phone swimming one time and my sister in law gave me an old T-Mobile phone. I found the unlock code and then put my sim card in and had service. However, I have only done this with older dumb phones, so I don't know if the smart phones would retain their smartness.

if it's "kinda in the middle of nowhere" and you dont have 4G coverage you are pretty much screwed just like me (for now) other posts have said metro is only giving 3G to those areas that had data service interruption but not all areas will get 3G. I live in Miami (huge city with a huge amount of metropcs customers) and havent gotten 3G! im am actually frustrated because central Florida does have 3G but not south Florida. you can try *228, option 5 on your phone and see if you get updated to PRL 3020 which is not guaranteed you 3G but you have nothing to lose!

I have oh so many questions:

Anyone got any 3G in NYC, specifically Manhattan or Brooklyn?

Do you need 3020 PRL to get 3G?

How to SAFELY update to 3020, and what are the consequences?
ok first, nyc no evdo update. that may change in the future. Second yes only prl 3020 will get you evdo at this time. if you want to put it on you have a couple of methods available, using lgnpst or qpst.
if you follow instructions exactly the consequences are evdo if you go to a evdo market. If you mess up really bad you will have to do lots of steps to fix the phone. however following the instructions is easy. no need to worry about messin up.

once you have prl 3020 do NOT *228 option 5. that will replace the 3020 with 3019.

I've searched around a lot and from what I hear it is widely speculated that Metro is soon going to completely abandon 3G in order to focus on 4G. It seems suspicious to me that they would begin to roll out 3G only to abandon it, but hey what do I know
They have always said, for at least a yr. They are focusing on 4g they want 4g coverage everywhere.

the only reason they decided to rollout any 3g is to clear up the congestion caused by the huge influx of android smartphones since the ascend and optimus came out.

I would think that everyone would say "1x sucks" and just use wifi. Lol guess not.

I do use wifi whenever I'm somewhere that has wifi. Unfortunately, most of my day is spent at work and I don't have access to the wifi.

When I get home tonight I'm going to try to manually update my PRL to see if I can get my 3G back. I had it once and then updated my roaming list and it put me back at 3019. Keeping my fingers crossed that I can get this to work! It was one thing to never have had 3G and not know what I'm missing. To have had it for a few hours and realize the huge difference in speeds, I now know my phone is capable of being much faster when not connected to wifi. It's just really unfortunate that Metro has such horrible customer service.

Just wanted to add my experience with my Optimus M. In Lodi, CA I still see 1x, but everyday I drive to Stockton, CA and for the last couple of weeks, my phone consistently switches to 3G.

I have the 3020 PRL, though I don't really know what that is, and I didn't do anything to get it. I'm on 2.2 (not 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 like some others have been talking about).

I use the speedtest.net app, and get less than 200kbps whether it says '3G' or '1X' up top, so it looks like they're capping it here.
