I currently have a HTC evo4g rooted and really like it but looking at the epic touch 4g because of the dual core processor and the screen size and type. Has anyone done this change and if so are you happy you did. Can you tell me the differences and give any tips or tricks you have found. How tuff is it to root, and what kind of dev support is this phone getting as far as Roms and kernels. Thanks for any input.

I just switched from the EVO 3D to the Epic Touch 4g. I've had it for about two days now, and I'm really happy with the switch, it has a larger and sharper display and it's definitely lighter. The Touch boots quicker and seems a bit snappier to me.

As far as root goes, it was so much easier than the EVO 3D if you're windows based using a program called Odin. It took all of 15 minutes and that was with the downloading and reading.

I have owned both phones in question. The Epic 4G Touch is a very nice phone but keep in mind that the only current ROMs are modified stock... Some have themes and such but you can get themes for your aftermarket-launcher-of-choice. CM7 is not currently available and a timeframe for availability is unknown at this point.

I have rooted and ROM'd all of my previous Android phones but haven't seen any real reason at this point to do so until some of the current bugs are worked out.

If you like custom roms and choice, stick with your EVO4G for a while longer and see how it plays out on the Epic 4G touch over the next couple of months... Just my .02.

I own a Evo4g and have been looking at the e4gt to replace my wifes Epic4G. I like everything about the phone except for the reception issues. A coworker tried out the e4gt a few weeks ago and the reception was far below that of my Evo, loosing signal while the Evo maintained strong connection. Thinking it was a bad unit, he got it swapped and the replacement was no different. He swapped for a Photon and though not nearly as nice as the e4gt in screen, speed and weight, it has far better reception and longer battery life. We're still waiting to see if Samsung will issue a fix for the reception problems including loss of signal that sounds remarkably similar to the CDMA lockup issue that plagued the Samsung Moment (and was never resolved). Considering Samsung's pathetic record when it comes to fixes and updates, I'm not holding my breath. I'm leaning towards giving it another week or two, then buying her the Photon.

its the Sprint network that might be the problem, not the phone..
I've had the evo4g, the evo3d, and got the sammy phone 2 months ago, and, for me, reception and signal strength has not been an issue.
Data speeds suck for everyone now, and, who knows if that will ever improve, but i'ver never dropped a call with this phone, suffer no LOS either when I was stock, or since rooting, and notice no difference at all between this phone and the evo phones; actually, call quality is MUCH better on this phone than it was on either of my evo's..

And, to the OP, there are thousands of posts over at XDA, to give you a flavor of what people think about this phone..all I can tell you, is that this phone BLOWS AWAY anything else I have ever had, and I have had cell phones since 1986! If you get one, don't root it for a week or 2, so you can see how it is as stock, Lots of people are just leaving it stock, since its awe sum that way as well..

I am in the sw suburbs of chicago, if that means anything...

I switched from the evo to epic touch at first i was like i might return this phone and stuff but the colors screen and battery(after hard reset) is great totally worth the upgrade as for roms i had a rooted evo but have not rooted the epic yet....as for stuff like data speeds on 3g i get 1.1mbps with no problem which is same as my evo but my 4g signal is stronger and faster 9mbps download and it doesnt waste as much battery on 4g as the evo

I had it for about 2 weeks then went back to my EVO4g.
It's a great phone, but I found that I just don't use my phone enough ( I have a job) :)

I've downloaded go launcher ex, voice actions with svox, and the touchwiz 4 theme and I can't tell the difference in my pocket. :)

When I need to tether I turn it on and pull out my iPad.

Wait 4 months and buy it for $99.

I've not had LOS issues in the month I've had the E4GT so I didn't go there. I don't want to be a whiner about signal strength, but it is an issue for my. It isn't significantly worse than either my Evo 4G or Evo 3D, but I do struggle to stay on the Sprint network in several places that my previous 2 phones could maintain a radio connection. It's not bad enough (for me) to dump the phone, but it is an issue in outlying areas for certain.

There are a few kinks/bugs for Samsung/Sprint to work out just yet. You have have an incredible phone in the Evo 4G and your ROM options are astonishing... Sense 3.0, CM7, Warm.... and so on. Hang in there for a couple more months.
