The 2.1 Speculation Thread

Hmmm, its not pinch to zoom, guy in that video was doing it wrong. Its actually a 2 finger circle gesture. Video posted by Quantumrand

http://quantumrand.net/phandroid/Hero-Swirl.AVI

Actually, it seems morelike pinch-zoom. If you watch the video posted by the op, there is a part on the screen that shows the user how to do it, and there are two arrows from two corners of the screen pointing inward, symbolizing pinch-zoom. Plus, the op video's hero was much smoother in doing this new function than the one you posted... not sure why

Well, maybe you expected some sort of congratulatory fireworks going off. Don't take it personal, it's just a tiring subject, the "2.1" thing...

For the post that the Hero is the most BUGGY phone??? Not even close! But everyone's experience is different.

For the SPECULATIVE and hopeful desires of an update coming soon... Who cares? Really! FACT is... this is such a departure from the norm when considering handsets. With the handsets old as soon as they are released, the promise of an update to the OS, ANY update is amazing... Like I said in another post/thread... You buy a VCR, DVD player, LCD Panel, etc., etc., do you also THINK you are entitled to the next updated firmware, driver, algorithm that makes the product better and is sold in the newest unit? No... Electronic's are sold as is... Let alone when in this particular instance you have 30 days to use it and determine if it meets you needs and accept the purchase or move on to another handset. On the 31st day, there really is no basis for ANY complaints regarding the phone, or how it works, etc.

SO STOP ALREADY!!! ENOUGH WITH THE 2.1 CRAP! People... this handset is 4 months on the market, the 2.1 code is a complete rewrite for those who are not in the know... just do your homework prior to posting that you don't know what the hell it is taking so long! Let alone too the Sense UI must be put on top of the 2.1... anyway, I would enjoy maybe the admin's putting some sort of VOTING to eliminate certain threads... Because it is so redundant and useless to keep reading these posts about 2.1. Blah, blah, blah... I'm venting... my apologies.

Am I the only one that feels that Android and HTC have all but forgotten about us Hero users with the development of more recent phones? I am tired of reading about the development of new apps and features that are only available to those running v2.0 and higher, while people that jumped on board with the Hero seem to be left in the dust.

I'm sorry for posting such a ranting comment in here as my first post. I've just read a few other threads and realize this is an old complaint. I'll keep my frustrations to myself since it seems there is not public arena to do so to the Android or HTC company themselves.

Alright folks. We combined all the speculation threads we could find, let me know if you see more hanging around (via PM please) and we'll take care of them, to cut down on the snipes, rudeness, ganging up on and so forth. I am of the school of thought that it will get here when it gets here and all the speculation is kind of pointless. You can see that from my post history if you care to look BUT there is no reason at all to be rude to those folks who want to speculate about it. That's what this thread is for. And with the new policies in place:

Android Forums - Announcements in Forum : Sprint HTC Hero

http://androidforums.com/site-updat...4-zero-tolerance-policy-all-members-read.html

We really should try to be on our best behavior. So if we are not folks keen on speculating about the 2.1 update let's just leave this thread alone, knowing new threads will get merged here, and stop with the bickering. I am not a mod so there isn't any implied threat here but I would hate to see one of our more active members get warned/banned or whatever for being rude about the 2.1 speculation. And no that wasn't aimed at anyone in particular either. Let's just play nice and not make the powers that be take any action. Please.

Yes, you must be... I'm tired of reading about so called left in the dust, phone envy malcontents...

+1 Voted!
HERO is the BEST phone out there!!! Hands down!

I guess I should excuse myself for expecting quality customer service. I wouldn't complain if I received all text messages people sent me and the phone hadn't randomly deleted all of my contacts twice in a month. But you're right, this is the best phone.

Have you modified your phone in any ways? I think what you are experiencing is not typical of the average hero users experience. I have not had one problem since I've owned the phone. I'm rooted with a custom kernal and lots of apps.
I see your only posts have been in this thread to complain. Search around and get involved in the community maybe someone can help you get your hero working as it should be.

I haven't done anything aside from downloading a handful of apps, news and such. I've read on other forum sites that the loss of text messages is a known problem with the phone and there is no solution currently. I'll search around as you suggest though to see what I can find. Thanks.

Is your firmware updated? Have you updated your Profile?

I haven't had a single issue with loss of text messages, even though I spend half of my time in an area where I can barely get 1 bar of service, shifting between Roaming and Sprint.

The only issues with messaging I've had are the occasional MMS that doesn't download, but I've learned to shut off WiFi before trying to download, as that seems to have an effect. I've also learned to download them in the stock Messaging app, because that's worked every time recently.

If you're having issues with slowdowns or power drains, I suggest downloading Spare Parts, and seeing what's using your power.

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the hell out of this phone like so many of us have.

I've had similar problems. Basically what I have narrowed it down to be, is something with the way my phone interacts with the PRL. Basically I have to update my PRL once or twice a week and do a soft reset (power off, unplug the battery, hold power, put the battery back in, power on) and then it's fine. So, if you usually get texts and aren't for a little while, do that. Has worked every time for me. I plan on going into Sprint and asking them about it, but I have to reflash back to original settings and I just don't really want to do it.

Another useful tip is to leave your phone in 1x mode rather than Hybrid when not using data excessively. It will keep your phone from constantly flipping between 3g/1x.

Yeah, lol, that would not make me too happy as well... I have yet to have one of those really bad experiences with it (Hero). customer service though is a Sprint Issue... I hope all is well with your phone now. It really is a great phone.

add this to the speculation. the moment is rumored to be getting the 2.1 update on feb 22.

Sprint rumored to update Samsung Moment to Android 2.1 starting Feb. 22 | Android Central

speculate away on how this is linked to the hero

Well, last I had read and understood, Sprint hoped to update both at approximately the same time. Maybe we'll get lucky and get it by the first of March.

It'd certainly give me a good reason to take my Mom's Moment and get it updated, since I haven't done that yet lol. But I'm only going to the repair center if 2.1 is out for the Hero and I have to go there to get it :p

Quick tip - call into care - get on with tech support and get a new NAI. Have them tear down your data profile and rebuild with a new NAI. Does the trick almost everytime
