Please forgive a question from a relative newbie. Several posters have mentioned testing download and upload speeds. Is this information available from the apps that came with the phone, or is there an app anyone can recommend for this?

FWIW, the update was pushed to my phone (unrooted, pretty much standard except for a bunch of apps from the Android Market) yesterday morning, and I'm pleased with the improvements so far.

Hi Larry,

I've been using the Speed Test app.

So will I need to root in order to get the OTA update??

EDIT
I went to the leaked 7.893 update, had issues and went back to 5.886 using R3L3AS3DRoot. I did not root though. Now the OTA fails.

I downloaded the file from John's post and tried to install it from recovery and it aborts the install also.

The theory is that you should stay at 5.7.893 and eventually it will be pushed to the rest of us as an OTA. That will be known for sure if/when it ever happens.

There is no known advantage reported by anyone of going back to 5.5.886 and going to 5.5.893. There are a number of disadvantages listed in the posting ... from John.

Sorry. I think my posts are not as clear as I imagine them :)

Here is what I did and why.

I had the original .886 that the phone came with. I really wasn't having any issues that I knew of, but I had really not used the camera either.

Being the fiddler that I am I decided to update to 7.893. I started having connection issues almost from the get go.

So I needed to get back to .886 as it was not giving me the connection issues. The only way I could get back was to use the R3L3AS3DRoot method and restore to .886 without root. So I did so and my connection issues went away.

Now I realize I have camera issues and would like to update to the new OTA release. I did get the notification that it was available so I let the phone download it and when it tried to install it it failed. Tried it 3 or 4 times all with the same result.

So I thought I could update by just using the OTA file that Johngalt links to in his thread and booting into recovery and updating from the SD card. It also fails. I'm not sure what my issue is here.

All these different version # are killing me!!

Ok you cant apply the update because the leaked version you put on there is newer than the OTA.. You can and did revert back to stock.. BUT you cant revert the kernel and base band (or whatever its called) they can not be changed back to stock... The OTA looks at your version your kernel and Base band and apps and all kinds of other stuff.. If it is not 100% stock the update will fail. Hope that makes sense.

Basically you cant upgrade to an older version of the software..

I think it is pretty straight forward now ...

If you were at 5.5.886 apply the OTA update and you will be at 5.5.893
If you were at 5.5.893 leaked version do nothing it is identical to the OTA 5.5.893
If you were at 5.6.893 leaked version do nothing just wait
If you were at 5.7.893 leaked version do nothing just wait

You can back out of some of the leak ... but not all of it. It is best to wait.

John Galt pointed out that there is something in the works that will allow people with the leak installed to go into a Verizon store and get reset to the non-leaked cycle. Nothing has been announced yet.

The new issue being discussed I can't help with. Perhaps someone in the All Things Root area can.

I'd be interested in hearing the result of that and the result of you going to the Razr.

... Thom

Well I received the Razr w/ a new sim card, and after the after the initial set up it appeared to work just fine. The next day the drops started again.
Yesterday afternoon just as i was getting very frustrated with the drops i get a followup call from VZW tech support asking if i was still experiencing problems.
Long story short (sort of) they said that they will send someone out to check my area for service, don't know if that means they will come to my home or just check the towers around here. They also said that VZW does not guarantee service in your home.
My drops have happened even while outside, so we'll see.

I'll have to return one of these phones, I like the feel of the Razr better so the Bionic is going back. Should I do a factory reset on the Bionic before returning?

Every time I check for my update, all I ever get is system update not available at this time. Never the Your System is up to date. Any way to get it?

I just read that to get the notification sent out from them you can't be "roaming" and perhaps you can't be on a "Wifi connection".

Are you not roaming and not on a Wifi connection ... for say an hour?

I'm guessing the 5.5 doesnt fix the 3g/4g drop...does the 5.7?

My experience is no, it does not fix the data drop issue. Others have reported different findings than mine of course.

I went to 5.7 without wiping and my data drops were the worst they have ever been. I went back to 5.5.886 and data has been rock solid but my camera sucks.

I thought I would try going back to 5.7 and do a complete system wipe before to see if that made a difference and no luck. Started having drops instantly.

I don't understand how so many of the same unit can exhibit so many different behaviors. Well, actually I can. When you have things manufactured in China there is no telling what you'll get from one unit to the next.

I admit to being confused. You seem to be unique in a couple of ways ...

5.7.893 has not been released. It is a "proceed at your own risk" thing. If you install it and it results in being the one Bionic in a million that goes up in smoke ... you pay for the replacement. That's the deal when installing a leak. That's why some of us without $600 in play money lying around chose not to install it.

You said you went from 5.7.893 to 5.5.886. I have never heard of anyone successfully doing that. Are we talking about the same thing? The recommendation was that if you were on 5.7.893 wait ... there is one (or two) things in the mill to allow you to get back in the production cycle.

I've tried three camera apps under 5.5.886 nd 5.5.893 and they all are kind-of good in some instance and suck in others. It is a marginal lens and if you are expecting something like an SLR quality you will never see it. It isn't a camera.

Like I said ... I'm confused.

The phone shipped with 5.5.886. I installed the leak 5.7.893. I had a lot of issues with it as far as data connection drops. So I went back to 5.5.886.

There are instructions on how to get back to 5.5.886 in the leak thread by John Galt.

I understand the risk I take when flashing a leak. I have done it with every phone I have owned and haven't lost a patient yet. *knocks on wood*

I am pretty sure I didn't expect SLR quality with a phone camera. I did expect something descent though. This one will not focus that well. Lots of blurry pictures. My BB Storm was better at pictures at this point, and that was quite a while ago.

What camera apps would you recommend I try? I am willing to give any a shot to see if I can improve the performance.

Maybe it was the people who did the multi-step leak install who had the problem getting back?

The three camera apps I tried were ...

Camera
CameraZoomFX
ProCapture

I have tried the same scene at the same time of day from exactly the same location . I dump all the images in the same folder and when I check the folder I choose the images I like best without knowing the app that took them. When I then check the file name it is almost always from the Camera app.

I find it a convenience. I am into rail-trail improvements in Keene nd carry my Bionic when I go out on a trail run. When I see a problem that needs to be reported (like a down tree or vandalism) I capture it on the Bionic and send it in with my e-mail report. The Bionic is perfect for this. The picture quality is at best acceptable.

Compared to a Hasselblad or Canon it is sick.
