I love my Nexus, but that new Sony is looking nice.

Only posting this in the Nexus forum because it still has to do with the Nexus camera.

I'm one of the people extremely disappointed with the camera. I went through the phase of defending it, saying "buy a camera if you want a camera", etc., but after messing with my friends s2 and getting pics of both, the gnex camera really is terrible.

The thing that caught my eye about the Sony is the camera. Now, I NEVER fall for the more mp = better myth, so that aside, the camera on this phone blows away any camera phone I've ever seen. There is absolutely no noise, even blown up really big. It literally looks better than many point and shoot cameras.

Thoughts? If this thing came with stock android, I wouldn't hesitate to get it.

although Sony makes good phone cameras you need to keep in mind that his picture was taking outside with great lighting. I do not think that this is a good way to judge the camera completely but none the less it does look good :D

That's true, but you can just tell the image is high quality. Even with the lighting, it destroys what the nexus could do in great lighting.

You can get pics just as good as that with the GN.

No, you cant. Not even close.

I can understand if you someone who isnt really into photography...then you wouldnt notice, but the GN cant get even close to that level of detail or clarity as that sony. And the gn has plenty of noise even in bright daylight; sony does not.

So what does the phone look like?

Of course there are going to be better phones than the GN. Several will be announced at CES this january and then released in spring/summer/fall of next year. The sony you speak of might not even be released in america. However, since there is no release date info from sony on the phone, i would not really look forward to it hitting stores any time soon - at least in the US.

the GN will be a great phone for the contract period, just as the nexus S is. users who want the GN will NEVER want the sony device unless its the next google phone. People bought the GN to get a developer phone, from google, that gets fast updates, is a vanilla version of android, and is the first phone with ics.

Please tell me this pic (taken outside with great lighting) isn't at least as good if not better than the Sony one:

And yes, this was taken with my Nexus.
There's always going to be something better in the pipeline. If this Sony phone comes out in less than 6 months, I'll be shocked.

Its not... not even close. And this is pretty much how Android works.. you buy a phone that's the hottest thing goin right now and 2 weeks later a phone that trumps yours gets announced.

It's not as good as the Sony pic. But it looks good.

Granted the Sony one was taken in optimal conditions, but it still did an excellent job. And yes, many of the GNex pics posted here on this site, by people defending it, look great.

I've been wanting to pass my phone on to my son and get a GNex, but the camera and external speaker are important and concerning to me.

I've been looking over many pics, posted here, other sites, and friends with the phone.

For one thing, it looks like they crank saturation to make up for tonal ranges, resulting in blown out pictures. This can be adjusted in post-editing, but you lose the trueness and it's totally unnecessary like a cheap botox fix. The iPhone 4 (non-S) did this a bit but still a top camera phone, especially in 2010.

Another thing, the detail in low light reflects weaker optics/lens/aperture than what likely even the iPhone 4 has, at least balance wise. You will start to see lack of detail in the darker, distance areas of the pics and graininess. Also, in movement there are more often focus and capture problems. However, some problems are likely partially due to the attempt at a fast shutter speed for bragging.

I don't think the camera blows at all, but they totally left the iPhone unchallenged in a category important to many people. Yes, it's just a phone camera, but the tech is there already. Of course the GNex is better than the iPhone in many other areas and an awesome phone still, IMO.

I will never own a sony phone again,, worst phone experience i have ever had,,, updates are so so slow,,,never never ever ever again

You do realise they've changed? They're bringing up dates fast and quick and are the only company confirmed bringing ICS to every Xperia 2011 phone. I love Sony phones, have great call quality and loud speakers.

a) "If this thing came with stock android, I wouldn't hesitate to get it." Well, it won't.

b) You'll have to switch to AT&T to get it. Enjoy having the country's worst cellular provider.

c) So this phone will maybe get unveiled at CES, and then maybe have a release date announced sometime after? Yeah, good luck. We'll probably see it around a year from now.

You can get good pics with the Nex all you have to do is wait 2sec for the camera to focus and snap, but if u move it,it will auto refocus thus if u take a picture during that time the photo will be out of focus and suck!
That helps a lot but even with the phone resting on sometime and already focused the pictures aren't very detailed. My Incredible took much better pictures.
