Verizon Rezound Window and Dash Vehicle Mount

I don't mind the car mode or docked mode. It's exactly what I want while driving down the road. I wouldn't mind it doing a bit of charging along the way however.
A simple device mount that allows a charger to access the port can be had at Wally World but that's not what I wanted. I think this dock could have been and hopefully will at some point be a better product. ICS might even improve it's docking behavior. Whatever happens in the future.. I highly suspect we'll see the Rz jump into car panel when docked. That's the idea of the dock.

My phone goes into dock mode in every configuration I've tried. I've not found a setting that turns that off.

My desk dock DOES have a setting to disable auto-dock but I can't find a similar setting when using the car dock mode. I wish it had one.

Thanks for reply.

With my HTC Sensation I simulate car dock and desk dock.
For desk dock I can uncheck starting automatically desk top mode.
For car dock this isn't possible, :( same as with your Rezound.

The Sensation properly charges with a HTC charger while it is in car desk mode.
So there may an other sitation as with the Rezound and its car dock.

How does the phone/mount function when listening to music? My hope was to use to dock to kinda postion the phone in a safe spot and use it to play music through my car docks aux jack. More or less I just kinda wanted to always have the phone plugged into the aux while it's in the dock so that all the audio is going through the stereo. Anyone do this themselves? Thanks!

Yeah... the stock MP3 player (with killa-stereo Beats) works fine. Just dock the phone, touch the top bar/line, pull down the menu showing the last 8 apps/icons and pick the Music player/icon. Then it's ok to return back to the main/large 6-icon screen, or the mp3 screen eventually will blank (power save mode) If we run the navi, the mp3 music will auto-mute while the navi girl is speaking. bye.

I still need to formulate/type my answers. I also need to work on an excel table with the comparison summary/info. This may take the whole night or two nights :|

Quick summary after the random tests is as follows....

- The 1A USB charger is too weak to do much with the stock/unmodified dock. We should try to use the 2.1A type.

- The 2.1A chargers are definitely better than the 1A type that I tried.

- Some 2.1A chargers are slightly better than the other 2.1A type.

- When there's heavy loading (running navi) it really can't charge the phone.

- When the phone is in standby mode (dark screen) they all will charge the phone - this is like how we have the screen off at home overnight when we're charging the phone.

------------------------------------

To modify the dock for more power, we can probably jump/short the D1 diode. This is because there will be a voltage drop across this diode (anywhere from 0.2V to more under load). Also should remove resistor R2 for safety if we're messing with the D1 diode (TBD later). To be more picky... optionally remove R3 and Q1 too.

Before modifying diode D1, just use your favorite 2.1A charger, run the micro-USB cable straight to the phone (without dock), and run all your favorite apps (navi, etc). If it charges, then the D1/etc mod may work for you. If without the dock and it doesn't charge, then maybe change the USB charger and try again (also without the D1 mod/bypass yet).

Optional/different issue: Probably can remove resistor R1 if we do not want the 6-icon Car Panel to launch when we dock the phone (TBD later).

(Insert usual/standard disclaimers here.)

Thanks
Bye.

So basically I take it that the Dock slows down the rate at which the phone charges. But the question is: Why?

The answer is its a piece of crap. You shouldn't have to buy a seperate special charger just to make it work properly. Her is the dock I am getting, specifically made for the rezound, looks better, wont put phone in dock mode, and will charge. There is a video at the bottom that demonstrates it. I will review it when I get it, and have used it a day or two. should be coming today.

That's terrible. The dock really does drop the rate of charging too much, and for no specific reason I can think of. I have an older HP Car Charger rated at 1A that I have been using since 2008. I've used it with an old HP iPaq 210, with my Droid Incredible and now with my Rezound. Yesterday after work, I used the Navi to go home. It was a 30 minute ride. With the screen on the whole time (disabled screen dimming) I started at 35% battery and at the end of the trip it was at 44%.

Basically, I don't see any reason why the dock would need to lower the charge rate, unless it's for some heat issue. My phone did get pretty hot.

@andr01d, to the dock circuit diagram :

The phone needs shorted pins 2 with 3 (data pins) for to know that it can charge fast with high current, not trickle current.
The HTC charger has this shorted pins, but the phone can't "see" it because there isn't a connnection between the pin1 to pin 1 and pin 2 to pin 2 on the dock board.

With this pins connected the phone will proper charge with a HTC charger :)

Or with pins 2 and 3 shorted on the plug (phone's side) the phone will proper charge with every charger if it can deliver 1A ;)

^hmm.... i must try it Harry2!! Is it gonna fry my phone... or turn it into a different phone with no bars/signals? :D (i also just rechecked the stock board at the DC2 connector... pins 2 to 3 are currently open / not connected with each other.)

You won't fry you phone ... ;)

Have a look at the specs for USB charger.

Battery Charging Specification ...
... The Dedicated Charging Port shorts the D+ and D- pins with a resistance of at most 200 Ω. The short disables data transfer, but allows devices to detect the Dedicated Charging Port and allows very simple, high current chargers to be manufactured ...

Looks like your HP charger is a good model (be sure to keep using it).
Regarding all the chargers... I think they are all not alike inside on the board. Some low cost designs start out at 5V 1A at no/light load. Then the voltage starts to sag as the load increases. Then we also deduct the voltage drop across the diode and eventually it can't charge or keep up with the phone. This is reason why I wanted to start with a 2.1A type... so that it can keep up (less voltage sag) when there is a load. (It may not drive all 2.1A in there because the phone will probably limit it or has some internal resistance in its power/charging circuit i think.) thank. bye.
