Razr >> Razr MAXX >> Raxr MAXX HD?

Hey everyone,

So I'm in the market for a new phone since my DInc. is showing its age and I'm eligible for an upgrade. The Razr MAXX seems awesome and I'm leanign to this... however:

Looking through Motorola's releases in the droid line, it's kinda ridiculous how fast they release devices. I mean, the Razr first came out, then a couple months later they release the MAXX, and now there are rumors of a Razr HD. I'm in that classic situation of not wanting to buy because there is always something new around the corner.

The ONLY problem I have with the MAXX is the resolution. Love the battery and design, don't care about ICS since it'll get it soon enough. What are your thoughts on waiting for the HD (if it even exists?) I was thinking about the GNexus but the battery and the way the phone feels really turned me off.

I just need peoples input to help me decide. Thanks!

Screen is fine for 99% of what you want to do, IMHO. Battery rocks!

You really don't need 720p or higher on a 4.5 inch screen. 480p and 1080p look exactly the same with a screen that small.

Now if the razr had a 50 inch screen.....

If you wait for the next big thing around the corner, you'll always be waiting. Unless there's official confirmation about the release of an upcoming phone you're interested in, find something you like now and go with it.

I had the Galaxy Nexus for a few months. Great device, just not the greatest phone. The battery life and the feel of the Nexus shouldn't be what you're worried about - it's the horrible reception. The MAXX is much better all around in my opinion, and I feel that it's easily the best device on Verizon right now. While the screen on the Nexus is a little nicer than the screen on the MAXX (except in sunlight where the MAXX screen is more visible), it's really not a big difference in most day-to-day tasks. And the larger screen size of the Nexus really doesn't play a role at all because, due to the on screen buttons, 99% of the time the usable screen size is 4.3" just like the MAXX.

If you're dead set on 720p resolution (which I personally don't believe you should be, but hey, that's your thing), then give the Rezound a look. It's definitely the sleeper phone on Verizon right now that hasn't received the recognition it deserves. Better battery life than the Nexus, much better reception than the Nexus, and it feels great in hand. If I didn't have the MAXX, I'd have the Rezound.

I just don't see what all the fuss is about over the screens...the screen on my Razr is just fine for watching movies on it when I'm too lazy to fire up the lap top (which is becoming increasingly common)...that pen tile amoled screen is a large part of the battery life on the Razr (a phone built with battery life in mind), and at 4.3"...I won't miss the 720p at all.

Now if it had a 42" screen...I want 1080p...but that might be a bit too much screen for a phone, LOL.

And even then, if you're further than 6' - 7' from the screen, you won't see a difference between 720p and 1080p. That underscores the how little difference one will see on a phone, unless they have it a couple inches from their eyes.

Everyone seems to overlook one important thing about the 720p screen...while visually it might not be that big of a deal and you might not notice a difference, it does make a difference with application support.
I've been bitten by this before and it seems all the "Next great thing" phones that app developers target have a 720p display.
That said, it is not such a big deal to develop apps for multiple display resolutions, but be honest developers...you will do the most debug and troubleshooting against a 720p display resolution.
Will this stop me from buying a RAZR MAXX... hell no. I will use that balls out battery WAY more than I would find app support problems...so if a RAZR MAXX HD is out when I'm eligable, great...if not, RAZR MAXX it is.

Agree re: G'Nex. I was one of those folks who did wait many months for the next great phone, and it was a major disappointment. I came from the D'Inc also. The G'Nex is a terrific device, especially if you love to tinker, but it was a disaster for me as a phone in a solid 4g area. The screen is very, very nice, BUT after 3 replacements, I couldn't care less about the screen I left behind. I'm just so happy to have a phone that makes & receives calls with great quality, doesn't drop data, audio doesn't disappear, and still has a nice screen! The Maxx is very smooth, and I have had zero issues even though mine is a LNR. The battery is crazy good, and I'm grateful to not have to spend 1/2 of my time turing things on & off just trying to milk a battery for 1/2 a day of light to moderate use. Only you know how important a screen is to you over the long haul, but the Maxx is an excellent device.

I truly enjoy the battery life I'm getting from my Maxx. I'm curious to see if the new 720p screen will effect battery life. If it does, then this version would be a solid choice if you're looking for great battery life.

Plus you can plug it into your 72 in. HD 1080p TV lol

Release must be coming soon. Amazon has Razr for $49 and Maxx for $199 for new customers, and $149 and $229 for upgrades. Cheaper than Verizon which just started adding an additional $30 for upgrades. So that would put the cost of the Maxx on VZW at $329.

I think hd is all hype. I had a nexus, and went back to a phone with a lower resolution( qhd) and really couldn't tell much of a difference. I like the maxx and the awesome battery life and really think it is a good phone. If you want to wait months for the hd by then something else will be right around the corner and you will be asking yourself the same question. If oyu need a phone now get what works but if you can hold off or think you will be more tempted by the hd wait for that. For me the maxx+ICS leak will hold me over for awhile.

It took devs awhile to get many apps updated for hd screens and most still haven't done it. I think they more develop for what is out now and not what will be out which is what took so long for apps to be reworked for the hd screens like the rezound and nexus.

What do you mean updated for hd screens? Even though an app may not be developed with 720p in mind, it will still run just fine on the nexus and look better than it does on the maxx. The screen on the maxx is pretty dated and i could never go back to it, but if you've never had anything better it will probably work for you. For example, my girlfriend is switching to Verizon after using an Atrix 4g on att, and I'll probably steer her towards the maxx because of the great battery life. However, if the screen is important to you, the maxx is pretty bad compared to most high end phones, and the maxx hd would be the way to go.

I wouldn't say it's dated, it's just not top of the line. And it's not bad compared to most high end phones. Again, it's just not top of the line. I had the Galaxy Nexus for a couple months and the Rezound. Sure they have nicer screens, but the MAXX is no slouch. Even after having those two phones, I chose the MAXX because I feel it's a better overall phone. The screen is well above average, and it's perfectly usable. I don't miss the Nexus or the Rezound in the slightest.

I too have an OG DInc and looked at the MAXX yesterday for the first time... holy cr@p! what a display, I was blown away at the performance! I use my phone for work and need the additional real estate of the 4.3" screen. I was waiting for the DInc 4g but it (appears) only to be a 4" screen and cost as much as the MAXX. I feel the MAXX will drop $$ in the next few weeks after the HTC Ones and DIncs release so I am waiting.

I love the screen on the razr maxx, my gf who has an iphone 4, says that my screen is better than her, (shes not a phone geek though). only con with the screen is, sometimes its a little grainy

While I get that whole I need the most resolution because its a number that people can understand.

I have no need for more dot pitch on the small screen. if they made it that extra 15% bigger (whatever the resolution difference turns out to be) then maybe.

And if they did bigger form factor - they better add more battery too. And I'm down like a clown.

otherwise - I can bid my time. I want a 5"+ phone to be a mini-tablet too.

I was fighting the same battle of the "next big thing." I'm coming from the Droid X, I had waited out the full two years and with all the rumors swirling of new phones I was conflicted. Then Verizon dropped the Maxx from $299 to $199. I had the $50 for waiting 2 years and as I was checking out I received another $100 off for upgrading to a 4g phone. Not counting the $30 activation fee (lame), I got the Maxx for $49.99. I think the next big thing can wait!
