Updated[13.2.12] Discuss all Samsung Galaxy S III rumors/release date/speculation/news

if they're taking notes from apple, this should have been expected. it's an evolutionary change every year. big jumps for people who wait 2 years because of their contract. smaller jumps for people who buy every year

Damn Apple and their highly efficient life cycles (well at least monetarily),and Samsung for their brazen mimicry.

So U.S. variants are planned for a tentative June release. Aside from a different processor what else can we expect to change? I doubt the physical home button will be transferred over, but are there any other prominent deviations that can be made?

what were those of you who were disappointed expecting the phone to do exactly? I am happy, battery life and power consumption are big points in my book. Could care less if it has 2ghz processor

Probably they expected to see 2Ghz A15 Exynos, 2Gb RAM, 1080p screen, lol. I knew that's not going to happen this time. To me, pentile screen like Gnex is the only bummer. Otherwise it's looking good overall.

No phone will ever kill the iphone(in terms of sales). However I think this is the best phone at the moment, lit looks like a mix of the the s series and the nexus, without the bump(so long bump).
These are the only complaints I have:

No ceramic- It's not that big of a deal for me, but I would've prefer a premium finish

Pentile screen- I'll be honest with you, one of my friends has the original galaxy(which to my understanding has the amoled pentile screen) and to me it looked fine(even with a much lower pixel density). Still we can't deny that it would've been better with the full rgb arrangement.

To me this is the device to get, the only reason I'm might not get it, is because I'm okay with what I've got, but if I were to upgrade then I wouldn't look anywhere else.

I'm an iPhone 4 owner and this will be my first android phone, I do think the One X looks better but I don't want a phone for looks plus it will live in a case anyway. I'm happy with the spec as I really wanted a memory expansion slot, my brother has a One X and the screen does look good, but to be fair, will the average phone owner know the difference? I'm sure the screen is a massive step up from my iPhone 4? Or am I wrong?

You will notice a tiny bit of pixelation on the GS 3 unlike the iPhone. But the extra screen space makes up for it.

So...are you guys planning on importing the international version?

These quadrants mean nothing for the US release. it will have a different processor

One thing that they didn't really focus on too much was the processor. Early indications are good:

AnandTech - Samsung Galaxy S III Performance Preview: It's Fast

Quadrant scores are as high as 5800 too according to gsmarena.

S beam and s voice are not new...just new marketing.

The screen thing is meh
Doubtful that us carriers will get the storage options
Processing remains to be seen...the device that hits the US will sport a different processor+lte
Call quality will be carrier dependant. they claimed better quality/call processing since the gs2 on every phone released.
I actually like the screen but like my notes larger screen better
The camera is a big deal...hopefully it pans out. i noticed the same shutter lag on it in the demo that exists in current devices

Basicslly the tech gurus are going to epect more. Those that are easily enticed by clever marketing will love this phone. It isnt a bad phone at all...but it wont be enough for people with gs2 + to upgrade imo...and they are not the market sammy is after on this one
- S-Voice.
- S-Beam (can send an entire photo gallery in the blink of an eye.. that is revolutionary) + NFC.
- The fact that the screen stays on while you're looking at it and don't have to keep tapping.. that's annoying.
- 64GB storage.
- Twice the processing performance and 65% improved graphics.
- Improved call quality.
- Larger HD screen.
- Much improved camera system.

Seems like a pretty massive upgrade to me, not even comparable to the small leaps between iPhone upgrades.

Edit:

- Wireless charging (industry first).
- Much larger battery.

Disappointing. I do kinda like the (not quite) midnight blue color offering I've mentioned a bunch of times. And the physical home key, because when the crap hits the fan, you want to hit the eject button, and you don't want the eject button bogged down in the software which just malfunctioned. There's a reason that all eject/'save my ass' buttons are mechanical on all machinery.

Until we see an S2 versus S3 camera quality showdown, I have to say that 8 megapixels is a joke, I couldn't believe it.

I said a while back that I wasn't going to get the S3 and was going to wait for the S4, but in the last week I was starting to question that. But no, after today's mess, I'm sticking with my noble steed the S2.
There's nothing groundbreaking about the III at all. It's just another new Porsche.

I'm interested to know how big the extended battery will be when that comes. Although the III has 2100mAh out of the box, I don't think it'll really be 'enough' given the screen size and bunch of unnecessary battery draining features. I do think the SIIIs original battery will last longer for it than the SII's 1650mAh affair did for that, but they'll be in the same neighborhood. (Are extended batteries a great way to get people to pay more for the phone or what?)

Awaiting confirmation on USB 2.0 for the S3.... lol, I'd say 2.0 is a done deal now.

I was going to make a Dark Knight reference but we neither deserve nor need this, I declare the SIII nothing more than a Super Nexus with a fruity sauce topping in the form of TouchWiz.

- S-beam does not already exist. This uses wifi direct to send data which is hundreds if not thousands of times faster than NFC.
- S-voice does not already exist. It uses natural language rather than commands, so if you're thinking it's Vlingo, you're mistaken.
- cant comment on the us carriers. Can't you buy them sim free over there?
- Anandtech has posted some blazingly fast early benchmarks..fastest phone out there.
- call quality (or call volume, should I say) should be better because of an in call equaliser, nothing to do with carriers.
- I saw no shutter lag in any of the demos, it just shoots straight away?

Can't help but feel that people are picking on this phone just because it doesn't have a 2GHz quad core processor, 2GB RAM, a 6" display and wings.

I have a gs2 and I think it's a huge upgrade; not sure how anyone can say otherwise. Nearly all of the hardware has been upgraded and there are plenty of software improvements.

This point would make more sense, if it wasn't the software that still had to respond to a press of the physical home button.

I believe it takes a backroad in regards to telling the phone what to do, like when windows freezes up, you can't click anything and nothing works until you Ctrl+Alt+Del

I'm not a multi-core/threaded programmer, but I would imagine it just needs to run the code that allows you to exit apps on a separate core/thread to other tasks. I'm sure that's what would happen with on screen buttons also.

I haven't seen any complaints about the onscreen buttons not working on the Nexus, but I haven't looked in any depth I must confess.
