Phandroid linked to a very nice writeup by someone whose been an iPhone user for years and decided to give Android a try. He discovered just how USEFUL Android really was. What makes this article great is that it's a very objective assessment; this is not someone pushing Android under the guise of being an Apple loyalist. He doesn't go into a hardware spec comparison, which would never have any real impact getting people to "see the light." What he does observe about the awesomeness of Android is probably some of the same reasons that attracted you and me to the platform.

If you ever encounter someone that you know would be happier with Android, but they can't seem to accept how Android could possibly be better, let them read this article.

For a moment there, I thought you were asking advice on how to convert your iOS wife to Android, lol

She did comment that my screen was nice (I have the Sprint-flavored One X, the Evo LTE). I've come to realize that the iPhone is the perfect phone for her, so I've decided to stop trying to convert her. If she ever decides she wants to try out an Android, I'll be ready to help.

The author of the article appears be one who tinkers with his devices a great deal more than most people. He jailbreaks his iPhone to get more out of it and when he got his Android, he roots that, too. For that reason, Android is pretty much the best choice for him.

I don't think this arguments are going to convert many iOS users to Android. Most iOS and even Android users will simply keep their phone unjailbroken or unrooted. When I read about what he does with his phone and what he likes, I just don't see a large fraction of users wanting to do even a portion of what he does.

It is definitely an interesting read and I'm glad he is happy with his new Android phone. However, I don't think this is that good of an article to convince the majority of users that Android is better. For those people who really like to tweak their phones, it would be a good article to convince them to switch.

Well, you have a collection of Android phones for her to play with if she ever gets the Android 'itch', lol.

Is it bad that I am trying to convert my android wife to iOS?

Wait...you don't want to support her with all of her Android issues any more?

also going to stop pushing an iPhone on my wife.
lol :p

Why does that make me think of this?

Agreed. Not everyone can be converted, and one can even argue that not everyone SHOULD be converted :).

But tinkerers aside, I do know for a fact that Android has lots of little convenience features (this author mentions the alarm clock toast that tells you how long before the alarm will ring) that can be enjoyed by all without any sort of customization.

I also approve of a lot of the recent commercials featuring android phones. They focus more on what Android can DO, rather than what they have under the hood.

In the end Android is not just great for tinkerers - it's ALSO great for tinkerers.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like the writer is just wanting a different operating system on his phone based on his article. Once the novelty wears off and Apple comes out with 4G offerings then I wonder if he'll be tempted to go back to the iPhone. I'll admit that it's nice to have a phone that is as unique as the individual, but being able to support that wide variety of customization doesn't go off without a hitch. It's the same when comparing a Mac computer to a Windows computer. Sometimes the flexibility of an O/S is important, and sometimes you just want it to work flawless.

Agreed. I rather like this feature as I often set alarms for different times for various reasons. Sometimes, I want to wake up earlier than normal, so I set up a different alarm. Sometime, I want to take a nap during the middle of the day and don't want to oversleep too much.

He did mention a number of these little convenient features in the article. Still, these nice features are lost in an article that primarily focuses on heavy tinkering. That is the reason why this isn't an article for the general user.

I haven't seen a lot Android commercials that I feel would appeal to the general public. I am aware of a recent Samsung one that is good, but I have yet to see it myself. All of the Apple commercials I have seen I have been really impressed with from a marketing point of view. I think Apple sets the standard for marketing technology to the masses. They make their products seem like they fit into people's daily lives and make them cool as well. They do it without any technojargon. The ironic thing I find is that there was an iPhone commercial that seems to do a better job marketing multitasking than any Android commercial I have seen that markets multitasking. On top of that, that particular iPhone can't even multitask. It bugs me that Apple does a better job marketing a feature that iPhones didn't have better than Android manufacturers can market this same feature that Android has.

In the end Android is not just great for tinkerers - it's ALSO great for tinkerers.

The marketing hurdle that Android manufacturers have to get past is shedding the image that Android is for tinkerers only. As an Android user who does not root his phone, I find it very feature rich as is and very handy. I just get the impression with so many tinkerers touting Android, the image of Android to the general public is that Android is meant for tinkerers.

The best marketing video I have seen for an Android device is one for the Asus Transformer. It was created by someone independent and not really used in the marketing of the tablet by Asus. It showed people enjoying the tablet and also showed off the keyboard dock and its extended battery pack. Android manufacturers need more official ads like that particular one for the Transformer.

I think it's a bit like drugs. It's not the done thing to be pushing a product man to man. People have to want things themselves. I can see the shiny shiny factor in lot's of things & it's down to the individual what turns them on in a product. Apple know that with their advertising, they can't appeal to everyone. In fact everytime I see them advertise it makes me ANGRY, like they're talking to me like I'm a child. But they know that in some other adults, it will work. People should follow their heart.

One thing that turns people on the most is the NEW!!! factor. Apple don't really have this, like we do. An iphone is an iphone, OK a new one will come out but it's still iphone, it's still iOS. Any updates are minor. We have an army of new phones, new roms & new hacks & mods to perform.

I must confess to pushing colleagues towards apple, but they're the ones I hate. If I was to convert them to android, I'd just tell them to grow up :D .

I have several android phones. Both are very good, but they are acting up. Not saying Android is bad or better than the iPhone, but since I am using a borrowed iPhone, the iPhone rules. Clearly superior to any of my android devices. Better sound, no reception issues, sturdy and well-built. Better in all ways.

Since both Criket and Virgin Mobile are releasing no contract iPhones, I'll soon say bye bye to android phones.
