Hi, When I go to check for updates I get pop up titled "Service Unavailable" and below that it tells me how to check for system updates..

I have been seeing this now for a few days... Anyone else seeing this?

Wiondering if it is really down..

Just curious..

Thanks

Actually...

There is one available.

About a week or two ago an update was pushed.

You'll know you got it if there is a new brightness slider at the top of your NOTIFICATIONS pull down screen.

....but not everyone has been able to get it.

My friend and I bought our phones at the same time. We are both on AT&T. The update was pushed to me, but not him. He is reading some other people are having problems too.

So, those of you not getting updates (or at least that particular one), you may have an issue.

A bad sim card has been suggested as a possible blame, but I can't confirm that.

May have forgot to mention that I am on Verizon in the US in my OP. Prior to Sept 28th I would get "No updates available" but since then all I get is service unavailable so it appears I may not be the only one.. Hopefully this will get resolved sooner than later.

i'm also getting this same error. last update was Sept. 30.
Also on Verizon.
I thought maybe because I connected to Samsung Kies software it might've messed with update settings but i tried connecting and disconnecting and still same error.
Also tried a sim pull and reboot still no luck.
Exact error message:

Service Unavailable -
To check for system updates, go to Settings > About device when service is available. - [EXIT]

Umm... that's the same steps I just did fool.

This is exactly what I am seeing. It's been doing this since Sept 28th for me. Has anyone seen anything official from Verizon identifying this issue?

It could be with JB being pushed in Poland, the servers are just overloaded with people checking.

Not likely.... my wife has exact same phone and she gets the "no updates available". Every day since Oct 1, we both check, I get service unavailable she gets no updates..

There a couple more posts on the verizon facebook page on this issue.. ZGN (nothing heard) from Verizon.

I am on AT&T and have NEVER been able to connect to their "server"

mine always comes back with "Server is unavailable.....phone will automatically check again within 48 hours"

I'm feeling like there is some problem with either my phone or the server where maybe my phone is trying to connect to a bad server address or something, but I have no idea how to see that or change it.

Since I think I'm only missing the "brightness slider" small update, which I don't really care about, I haven't taken the time to pursue further.

Any ideas?

I had the same problem, I went to vzw store today to have them figure it out, they were baffled, but they swapped out the sim card and walah!! It works now! I have no idea why it worked. Makes no sense. But give it a shot guys, they didn't charge me because of the issue, don't just ask for a new sim card, show them what's wrong, and they'll give it to you.

I noticed a few days ago while checking for new software. I came here to start a thread, but it looks like a common problem. I'll sit back for a while and see what you guys figure out. I'm on Verizon.

BTW: For those with brightness issues, you should give Lux Auto Brightness a shot. It's so much better than the native auto adjust. It will adjust before you can open the lock screen, and it won't continuously adjust while you are looking at the phone, stressing your eyes out. I don't feel the need for a brightness slider in the notification bar anymore. I certainly did before.

I'm experiencing this problem as well. I'm on Verizon. Some report that a new SIM card fixes it, others don't.

What I want to know is how the problem arose in the first place! I was able to check for updates after I got the most recent update. What changed that is now causing this error?

Good question, man. Who knows? All I know is I heard the SIM swap did the trick. Did it today and it did indeed work.

Same issue here. Vzw gs3 started doing it today. Anyone know what's going on?

I was able to check for an update in sep. 30th and now my symptoms are the same as you guys! Service Unavailable WTF? If there was such a issue I dont get why verizon cant send a message to all s3 users. Cell phone companies never notify their customers when there is an issue with one of their devices.

At Verizon as we speak. Just demanded a new sim card and the problem is fixed!

For what it is worth, this problem doesn't seem like a Verizon Wireless system wide issue.

My About device -> Software update -> Check New option works as expected.

No new software update available.

Interesting. Good to know. For what it's worth, I've seen at least one person report that a factory reset fixed it too.

It would be nice if Verizon issued a statement of some sort about this, or at least informed their reps to inform people who call in with this problem!
