Root OTA update, please explain...

Hi,

I am new to the android world: i bought an HTC One S just two weeks ago.

I followed all the instructions in this message board so I could root the phone, perform NAND backups and get rid of bloatware.

Then a few days ago, the HTC update for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean comes, but when I try to install, I just see the ClockWorkMod Recovery window and I can't go on.

If I understand correctly, customizing your phone is more or less pointless if you want to be able to update the android version whenever it's possible. Am I correct?

I would like to have the cleanest version of android possible, but I am finding it more difficult than I expected.

I think I have two options:
1. wait until there is a ROM available with this update. But how do I find that? Most 4.1 ROMS were "unofficial", previous to this update.

2. go back to the start, install the update, and then root the phone again. In that case, could you tell me how can I uninstall ClockWorkMod?

I would just wait until there is a ROM to install, the popular ROM's like AOKP, MIUI, or Cyanogen Mod, are always good choices and behave relatively similar to stock Android.

Mind you Jelly Bean for Cyanogen Mod 10 is still in nightly meaning it isn't as stable, i am running one, and it's fine though...varies on version too.

Woah Woah Woah. Stop right there. Did you say 4.1 Jelly Bean update??????? Are you sure it wasn't sense 4.1 update? Do you have unlocked HOS or are on T-mo, or one of the UK carriers??

Ops, maybe you are right :/ so it's not the same i guess :/

anyway, and just to be sure, how could I uninstall ClockWorkMod so it will stop preventing the phone tu update?

As for the ROMS, they look too "themed", I don't know, are they as good as the HTC version without the bloatware?

ok so I really need your help now

I tried to flash two different roms (cyanogenmod and miui) from clockworkmod recovery and none of them worked, I get black screen (miui) and htc logo freeze (cyanogenmod).

i didn't do anything special, just wipe everything (cache, data, factory reset, dalvik) and install the rom from zip and reboot.

the thing is that in the process i formatted the sd card and i don't have any NAND backup, I am completely lost and my phone is useless, please help

I have tried the factory reset from the recovery mode, but then again Clockworkmod appears and prevents me from doing it. I find clockworkmod most annoying, to be honest.

Are you HTC dev unlocked?

If so, its probably because you didn't fast boot flash the kernel

it is unlocked and rooted, i followed all these steps.

what should i do? I mean, I thought clockworkmod did all the job when installing ROMS, I didn't know I had to do sth else...

Its a HTC dev problem. I have created a thread for my device on how to do it. I'll link it when I get home in about 30 mins

The problem is your recovery can't write to the bout partition. So you still have a sense kernel and an aosp ROM and they aren't compatible

Following this thread should solve your issue. Its not written specifically for your device but the steps will be the same. You fastboot flash the boot.img from the ROM youre trying to flash

I made it! Thank you so much!! I used the bootflash solution and worked perfectly

Now a few more dummy questions:

1. Now that I am definitely off the HTC Sense path, is there a way back if I wanted to? I don't have neither the ROM or the kernel now :/

2. Is there a "better" or more stable ROM (MIES, Cyano, etc) according to you people?

3. The problem I see with custom ROMS is: whatever customization you do with it (widgets, apps) is lost when you update to the next stable ROM version, is that correct?

You just download a sense ROM and pull the boot.IMG from it.

As long as you are upgrading from one version of a ROM to the next, you can wipe only dalvik cache and cache before flashing and you won't lose any data

Flash image GUI is now available for our phone for those that have issues flashing kernels. Now we can do everything from phone without PC.

I would strongly recommend doing it from fast boot. Or at least successfully doing it a few times from fast boot so you know how. If flash image GUI messes up and you don't know fastboot you're in a world of trouble without a working phone.

He's never stated which hboot he even has. There may be no need for fast boot at all anyway. Hboot s below 1.13 can still flash boot image in recovery with twrp. Since all the variables weren't stated I just figured I'd throw flash image GUI out there.
