Root Symlinked Gapps for CM9 And CM10 (w/ Google Now ICS instructions) (09MAY2013)

I installed your gapps and google now. I don't seem to have any issues so far with gapps. I notice that google now doesn't speak back though. I followed your instructions to the "T" with a fresh ROM install on MTDEV's newest CM9 update. The other thing I wondered was exactly what apps are included in gapps?? Thanks for your help and progress you are making on this!

chillz if you need any kinda help on that hala at me. I got a evo v so I been using my triumph to test roms I try and port so if you need help I will try Im just trying to upgrade my experience in android. right now im on noob level doe

it just causes bootloops and i cannot get logcat to pickit up it may be a lost cause im not too well experienced for trying to port an app with this indepth coding
I really doubt it will work with CM7 because you would have to backport to GB. I highly doubt that things will work as they will need special permissions only found in ICS and up. They had a hard time just porting it to ICS cause it was made for jellybean, and JB has permissions that ICS doesn't.

I just tested on my paranoid build and it told me the weather as the page loaded. It also told me what 5 times 5 million is, also said "Detroit Pistons" and it told me the pistons lost to the bobcats, and the time of the next game. Did you use Now online or offline? I used M7 offline just in case anybody was wondering.

Would it be possible to symlink everything except google maps/navigation. I thought clearing the cache would make navigation work but it is once again freezing at the google navigation logo and force closing when I hit the back button.

CM9 12/31/12 Google now offline
It has to be a ROM thing, cause maps is not included with this.

Edit: It may just be a Maps things also, a lot of reviews are saying it crashes.

Ok, I found something, but I haven't figures out what caused it. In framework the google maps jar was 4kb. So I extracted the symlinked Gapps zip with root explorer and the jar in there was 155kb so I copied it to system/framework and changed the permissions and everything was fine. Now to figure out what is happening from the zip to the system. It is not symlinked or changed in any way. I'll see what is going on and see if it is something with the updater script or not.

Ok, so I have been running some tests and I am pretty sure that I did not symlink enough stuff with the ICS version, cause we are still running out of space in the /system partition. So I am working on a new version. I learned a lot after working out the JB version and am applying the workarounds for the ICS version. I'll post it in a while just need to do some more tests. I think as soon as one file can't fit it just stops doing the process and finishes with out error cause I have seen different files not installed at different times.

What's up everybody?

After testing extensively, I have came to the conclusion that, We are not gonna have enough system space for Google Now offline. So we will have to use Google Now online, instead of offline. I have requested permission to post a symlinked offline package over at XDA, but haven't heard back yet. I have installed the symlinked Now and Gapps Ver2 and have not found any issues, all files seem to be present and working.

Here's the breakdown:
Google Now offline uses about 53 MB

<<<<<Situation>>>>>><<<<<<Free System Space>>>>>
Fresh Paranoid install 51.65 MB
After Symlinked Gapps Ver2 57.12 MB

The problem is that Now needs to be installed first, I am sure that the CM9 releases have more space available but that is what I did my testing on.

My goal is to be able to use every bit of system space for the ROM, allowing us to make the ROMs as good as we can with out having to scalp them to fit on our system partition.

There's a flashable zip file that comes with this one. No need to clean anything. So long as you're running CM9, this should work. It works on adamto's CM9, but I'm not sure about Paranoid. Basically, it replaces voice search with Now, opening it when you open the search tab on the top of your home screen. Do not use this with CM7, or it will brick your phone.

The point for this gapps was to open up space under /system. That's where the gapps is stored and there isn't enough space for the full ROM and gapps with google now. If I can figure out my building problem I'll make another version that doesn't use space from /data and will use at least minimize the space used in /system.

Just updated both packages to fix Facelock feature. Spent hours testing on my dev phone and couldn't even get Facelock to show in the settings, then I decided not to skip the device setup, and there it was. Long story short Facelock requires you to log in to an account, to even show up in lockscreen options.

Haven't had the time to test the JB version, but the fix was pretty straight forward.

I had to create placeholders in system/vendor/pittpatt, so that the symlinks could be created, and fix the install-optional.sh to put the files in the right places.

If you are already setup, you will probably need to wipe cache, install ROM (to remove any old Gapp files), install GNow/Gapps then reboot, and all should be fine.

Let me know how it goes.

Maybe there's something I'm just not seeing, but how do you download any of these files? When I click a link to Mediafire, all I get is a page full of ads. There is no link to download anything.

Edit: never mind... Apparently the site didnt like any of my desktop browsers. It's downloading on my tablet now.
