Using Hotmail/Outlook in S3/S4

Hey all,

I am planning to switch to an S3 or an S4, but I've never used an Android phone before. I've heard lots of positive things and am looking forward to it, but have a question regarding emails.

I was told that I need a Google account to activate the phone, and purchase apps etc. Which is fine, I do have one. However, my main email has been Hotmail for several years now and it's a huge hassle to change every subscription I have in Hotmail to Gmail.

One of the blogs I read mentioned that I'll have to use Google and Hotmail (or Outlook.com) and have Google push Hotmail into my phone.

On another post I read that there's now a new Hotmail App for Android that will push the email automatically.

And on a last post, I read that I can just enter my hotmail account into the Android phone through Account Settings/Adding and everything will work fine (including push).

Ideally, I'd want to use option 2 or 3 (not pushing hotmail through gmail), so I'm hoping someone can confirm the process with me.

Thank you!

Gordon.

Only app purchases would NEED to go through your Google account

Yup and I'm fine with that, I do have the gmail but I've been using Hotmail for years now, and didn't want to go through the hassle of changing all my accounts to gmail.

One last question: does the S3 (or S4 if you know it) use push for Hotmail, or does it just "refresh the inbox" every X minutes?

I think I read somewhere that it uses push for gmail.

There is an option to choose folders to display so you can get access to junk etc. One thing I found with all push email clients was battery drain although the stock one is a lot better than the actual Hotmail app. What I did do however is once I had set up my Hotmail using the stock email client, I went into settings and set the account sync schedule to push from 8 in the morning till 10 at night and to manual from 10 till 8. This makes huge difference to my battery and also stops me getting woken during the night with some obscure company sending me emails. Good luck with it.

That's a really good tip, thanks a lot! I'm sure that saves a lot of battery now that you mentioned it!

So basically between 10PM and 8AM, if you want to get your email, you have to open the client and hit refresh?
