[Verizon] Going to Italy with my VZW gnex

What do I need to know or do? I prolly would only make a call in an emergency. Do the big cities have 4g. I would guess wireless should be available and I could use Skype or FB messaging I guess. Only be there 9 or 10 days but would like to stay connected.

I'm pretty sure all of Europe is GSM. You couldn't even use it in an emergency. Now you could Skype if you're on WiFi.

This is correct, Europe is pretty much exclusively GSM, and the Verizon Gnex doesn't have any GSM radios. You're not going to get any signal while over there, so you're only hope for calling or texting is going to have to be done on WiFi using a VOIP client such as Skype.

my suggestion is to borrow or buy an old feature phone that is gsm so you can purchase a prepaid sim card for voice calls and use your gnex when you have wifi for data (if no laptop)

There might be one or two , but I'm not sure on which models. Some smartphones Verizon has launch are both cdma & gsm as well.

VZW, has a handful of what are called "World phones" that include GSM radios.(doesn't matter if "smart" or "dumb" most aren't)

They are far and few between thought. I "think" the Incredible 2 may be one, you'll have to research though.

Don't know if the link will work, if not, just go to VZW's site and type in International, it'll lead you there. But here's a link of current Global-ready phones they have. You can also do a loaner program for the short time you're there. All depends on your needs.

My advice would be to research a 'rental' phone for calls and texts that works in Italy, use your Gnex if you wish on WiFi only, but do make sure you disable data (mobile and otherwise, but not WiFi) while you're there just in case.

I went to Israel a while back, took my Droid for WiFi and offline maps only. Used my Napoleon (an unreleased VZW world phone) with a prepaid SIM card for Israel for calls and texts.

Put your phone on Airplane mode, and turn WiFi On.

Before you go make a Google Voice Account. (I prefer to choose to make a new number).

Download and install Google Voice on your phone, and also get Groove IP Lite.

You can text with Google Voice and call people with Groove IP Lite.
