Help Advice needed: JellyBean has made my Samsung Galaxy Note v1 SLOW-W-W....

Hi

Newbie question:
After my Jellybeans update, my Samsung Galaxy Note 1 is often running horribly slow even after a reboot. It just seems to open everything really slowly...

I have turned "Power saving" mode off during normal use and yes that helps speed things up.

It often gets hot and chews through a 100% battery charge within only mild usage within a day.

One thing I dont understand is how can I kill things that are running?
e.g. Once I have opened GoogleMaps will it keep hammering the processor and/or battery?
If so how can I kill it, short of reboot the phone?

What does holding down the middle button at the bottom (i.e. the Home key) actually do? Is that a list of things that are still running or things that have recently been opened but which are now closed.

e.g. I have installed various instant messaging systems:
Skype, WhatsApp and Viber
I need them all!
But just by being installed are they draining CPU/resources?

What about all the other items in the top menu thing that you can drag down from the top of the screen? e.g. WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, Mobile Data, Multi Window, Sync...

Which of them are the worst offenders for slowing down the phone.

With thanks

J

evidence seems to be mounting that some people are finding the Note very slow/lagging after the update to JB (but not all)

I haven't seen any suggestions that don't involve rooting/'hacking' the handset that help, factory resets don't seem to be enough.

It seems that Samsung have released a crap-shoot of an update

From my own experience of the JB update I do not have any problems at all, but everyone has their phone set up with different apps, different data, different SD cards etc. etc.. Also there are different ways to apply the update - via Kies, OTA or with a full factory reset and Odin. Then you have rooting, replacement kernels and who knows what other subsequent activities have gone on to potentially destabilise the phone (not that rooting itself does any harm). In other words it is very difficult to diagnose a phone across the internet with practically no knowledge of its history and current setup.

If your phone is hot, losing charge quickly and running slow then you probably have one or more apps which have gone nuts and are burning through your CPU. By installing a CPU monitor type app you should hopefully be able to identify the villain. Try this free app for starters....

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.systempanel

If/when you've resolved that problem you might also want to check the phone for wakelocks - apps which prevent the phone sleeping when the screen is off. I quite like this free app for that purpose....

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector

Wakelocks ought not to slow the phone down, but might indicate apps which are costing you battery life.

The CPU will run fast for a while after booting - possibly for a few minutes if you have a lot of media on your memory card(s). Give it time to settle down and then refresh the display in SPL and scroll down to see which apps have accumulated a lot of CPU seconds and/or which are continuing to burn through CPU. You may need to tweak the SPL settings to show system apps/processes as well as the end user apps and services.

Yes I concur with this. If I do a power re-boot, things are slow and laggy for a few minutes. But once everything settles down performance and responsiveness return to normal.

I've given up. It's totally random. Phone runs fine and then suddenly it gets slower and slower then hangs for about 30 seconds while it does whatever it is that it is doing and then slowly returns to normal. This happens maybe 5 times a day. It becomes apparent when I start to quickly swap tasks, say from browsing to taking a call to showing a picture to maybe opening another app.
My CPU montor just tells me that it is all system processess that are taking up the resources so I can't delete them or disable them.
Something called Security Storage is my biggest resource hog using 12% of my CPU 14% of my battery and using 36MB of memory. No idea what it is and dare not delete it...
Any clues
My monitoring tool is the All-In-One_Toolbox. If that's any good ;)

No clues I'm afraid, except if you Google for "android security storage" (without the quotes) you will find other discussion topics for this subject, not necessarily related to the Note, but perhaps with some ideas and solutions. Lots seem to be from the XDA forums, which is where the developers and tech wizards hang out.

Here's a sample thread, dating back to 2011 and for the SGS2, so not a new problem for the Note or for JB, just an Android thing....

Lagginess varies somewhat but it keeps being damned long after it has rebooted.
i.e. it keeps taking 1-2 seconds to respond to button presses such as the home button.
It doesnt sound like much but it gets to be effing irritating after a while!

What CPU, Memory and Storage levels should we expect after it has settled down?
Mine are
CPU: 8-10%,
Memory: 252M Av (i.e. about 70%?)
Storage: 28% Av

I know what the CPU is (i.e. the central processing unit) but what does it mean by the other two? Is Memory the RAM and is Storage the memory card?

Ship, your figures there seem pretty normal for a machine which has stabilised. You've understood the terms correctly.

Lag straight after booting is normal, up to a point, but unless you boot daily or several times a day then really this should be a on-off inconvenience for days, weeks or months at a time. You shouldn't need to keep booting regularly once it is set up properly and running smoothly. Also you may notice a delay the first time you open an app following a boot, but once run once it should remain cached and be faster to access thereafter - unless you reboot again, or kill it, or clear memory, which will flush it out of cache.

If your phone is still as slow as you say then I'm afraid I don't know what else to suggest. If the CPU utilisation is low then there should be no problem with responsiveness - at least not in the order of a second or more unless you are talking about heavyweight programs like sat nav or games.

I've tried everything :(
Hard reset and leaving the phone "empty" for a few hours. i.e no downloaded apps, no sd card, nothing. Just out of the box and a sim card. No music, pictures, not synced to anything.... It still does it.
I suspect that it is a case of the hardware not being able to cope with the JB OS
I seem to remember a few months ago of hearing talk of some service providers removing some of the S-memo/note functionality as it was too RAM/CPU hungry.
I'm wondering if my provider (Orange/EE) just released the update and this is the result.
I'm a bit miffed really. I can't change my phone until November. Looks like I'm destined to six months of hell :(

Thanks dude, although I'm not so sure what the video proves. My phone was smooth after a hard reset for about 2-3 hrs and then the problem re occoured.
Also, I can't see the point in having to disable, turn down, minimise and un install everything in order to get the phone to run smoothly.
It's a bit counter productive don't you think.
Here you go guys, an amazing screen, dual tasking on that same screen, it'll be amazing.... Oh hang on, you'll have to turn your screen brightness down to the minimum otherwise your battery will last for 30 mins and you can dual task on that screen but only if you have 20 or less apps installed and sync turned off and the gallery disabled.... It's a bit frustrating don't you agree.
To have had to have done a hard reset and removed all of your apps in order to get a smooth phone again. That can't be right ;)

Well today after disabling a few things after just over 5 hours since recharging I have 89% battery left - which is better than usual although I haven't used the Note that much today. But it's looking good! It seems I can't stop Maps permanently - it keeps on reviving itself!

I managed 1 day and 13 hours with 8% battery left yesterday evening :) That's two working days worth on one charge.

Hi guys.

So I saw this forum/discussion and decided to register to give my 2 cents too.
I have a Samsung Note(1) and like many others I too upgraded to 4.1.2 JB and once I upgraded I noticed MANY MANY problems!!

1. Phone lags horribly.
2. my virtual keyboard decided when it wants to work.
3. when using an app or the browser they will work for a couple minutes then just crash.
4. when my keyboard decides to work and when I type lets say W O R K, it will take about 3-5 seconds for each letter to appear....

I did a restore of my phone and deleted EVERYTHING and then reinstalled some of the apps I was using before the restore but it didn't help.... My phone is still messing up and it's actually getting worse...

I don't know what else to do, i'm getting so angry with it i'm contemplating smashing it against my bedroom wall!!

If factory reset and formatting of storage is not getting the job done then I feel it's either a trip back to Samsung or the supplier for warranty work or sleeves rolled up and getting a little more involved. A factory reset definitely does not wipe everything out completely and stronger methods are required to completely eliminate all traces of the past and start over.

I'm not really qualified to advise on more ambitious methods of fully wiping out the phone to start over, and such activities can invalidate warranty and are not without risk, but I will direct you to this post and wish you luck....

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41777499&postcount=104

You will find a lot more technical information about flashing kernels, recovery, ROMs and wiping on the XDA Forums, but there is plenty to read and understand BEFORE you start trying ambitious things. I cut my teeth on the ZTE Blade, which was very cheap and could be sacrificed if the worst happened. It never did, but I would want to be sure I knew what I was doing in full before pushing my luck with the Note. I'm afraid that means reading and researching beforehand.

To add to what tdodd has said about factory resets a half way step would be to do a wipe and reset using the Android Recovery Console, as described by NeoGrandizer's posts #6 and #16 at the following link.

http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-note-2/687561-4-1-2-updated-battery-drain.html

Personally, being ultra cautious, I'd remove both SIM and SD cards before doing so.

It may also be relevant to say that an SD Card can cause problems if it is either corrupted, or it has a corrupted file or even if it is simply too full. Hence un-mount the SD card, remove it and restart the phone. Check if the situation has improved before re-inserting the card. Incidentally, there are some reports on the SGN2 forum that SD cards have been damaged by doing the upgrade from ICS to JB.

Thanks for posting the link to the post about how to hard reset. You posted it a while ago but I couldn't find it now that I need it.

Thank you for the feedback Pinmac1. I use it rather often and I do wonder whether I'm overdoing it. However, NeoGrandizer does explain it well and there seems to be a stream of new users that need his guidance.

..... I've been having a play around in a most non-technical way. I wondered whether to start a new thread but thought it worth tagging it on to the end of this one.

Since the JB update I've had a smooth experience but with the way I use it ie wifi on all the time, I've been barely getting a day out of the battery compared to about 2-2.5 under ICS.

So I've been turning the wifi off when I'm not using it and now get much more battery. I also have my phone data turned off as I'm on pay as you go and none of my apps are allowed to auto update.

However, I've been getting some terrible lagging and slowness and on closer inspection I have noted the following:

  • I seem to get the slowness or lagging occurring in any app or even just swiping screens.
  • My system ram creeps up and up until I hardly have any left, it normally runs around the 650 mark but has been going up to 780 (out of 863 available).
  • If I free up ram it still lags and goes slow randomly for several hours.
  • At one point it wouldn't come out of standby for 10 mins and the battery dropped vertically (on the battery monitor graph) by about 15%.
I've now gone back to leaving the wifi on but off overnight and it seems to be running better. I've had no slow downs at all in three days.

What does this all mean? Sorry, I don't know but I was wondering if my apps and system are so desperate to access the internet (and I won't let them :D) they are throwing a complete wobbly until they do and for some time afterwards!

Personally I keep WiFi, Mobile Data and GPS disabled unless I need them. WiFi on all the time - I might get one working day, but even with GB I never had much more than that, so 2 days I find amazing. As I have explained in the past, I do notice that things get a bit congested after a power restart. I have so many apps installed that they are all fighting for CPU and connectivity at first. Then things settle down. But I have also noticed some temporary congestion if I switch WiFi back on after a long time - all those apps are desperate to sync updates start to happen. But after 5-10 minutes everything seems to settle down again.
