Edit: Went into recovery, cleared caches, and flashed zip. Black GMail didn't work and the Play Store disappeared all together. So I did it all over again and fixed permissions as well.....same result.

hm im not sure why but for me it works fine. try:
install this as a normal apk then clear data in settings/apps/Gmail
Reboot to recovery then flash this without wipe
report back

Any ideas how to turn it off, can't see anything in accessibility.
