Help HTC ONE battery discussion (usage, charging, etc.)

It's always suggested to drain the battery down to 1-2% then recharging to 100 without any interruption and doing this for at least 5 cycles.

I don't really see it "hurting" it but in the long run it may not entirely last as long as it would have.

However for me, I've always done what you did for all batteries except for my current extended battery and I never had what you could call bad battery life.

That was applicable to nickel batteries. If anything, you are supposed to leave the phone on the charger for an extra few hours after the charging light turns green. Do not drain the battery on purpose when you first get a phone.

+1 - The Lithium-Ion batteries used these days don't acquire the capacity "memory" the those old batteries did. My battery runs down to anywhere between 20% and 40% daily and I always just plug it in and leave it charging all night until I get up. Haven't had a problem with any of my phones doing that.

Hello All

I'm on UK 3 network, not rooted and version 4.2.2, software 2.24.771.3.

What I'm about to describe wasn't an issue before I updated to 4.2.2 but to make matters more confusing, the issue didn't start until 3/4 days after I updated the software.

Prior to update, overnight, the phone would be on Airplane mode, auto brightness, wi-fi & mobile data turned off and when I woke up (after 7hrs) phone would have lost 3/4%. Now, with the same setings, same length of time, I'm now losing 40-50% overnight!

I have done numerous factory resets, have deleted apps and even had my phone sent away to HTC repairs. Explained in meticulous detail to the HTC helpdesk what the issue was, I then get my phone back (After 9 days) with a note from HTC saying they have rigorouslyu tested the phone and can find no fault with it, aaaagggghhhhh!!!!!

Anyways, I'm loathed to send it back to HTC. I'm also getting close to my wits end as my phone is used a lot for streaming music from Soundcloud (my office lets me listen to music all day) and I'm lucky if I can go 4-5 hrs before I'm out of juice.

Power settings, History shows me getting 8hr 14m 31s on battery and Android system accounts for 89% of my usage, this is surely not right!

I've downloaded Wakelock detector but tbh I don't really know what I'm looking for here! It shows me that an app called SystemPanel was active 99 times but when I check this through the SystemPanel app, it tells me it's Average Consumption is 0.2%

Power save mode is on 24/7

If you guys need anything lse then ask away and thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers

I had an excessive wakelock the other day. GSam Battery Monitor identified Google Play Services as the culprit - it sounded like a bug with location services which was supposedly fixed with Play Store 4.3.10, but I had all location stuff off and was using 4.3.11.

Nevertheless I force stopped Google Play Services, rolled Play Store back to 4.3.10, left data/wifi off and gave it a few hours. All clear. Turned WiFi on, let Play Store update, waited. Still clear. Couple of days later, no repetition. Toggled location stuff on and off, no diff.

Conclusion? This may be unrelated to what you had. But in the process I found that there had been a Google bug which was causing 100% wakelock with location services in some HTC devices. It should be fixed, but I wonder whether that's relevant to what you had? I'd check your Play Store version, and try GSam and look for wakelocks from Google services, especially in the detailed list for any starting nlp.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Have dowmloaded GSAM and it tells me that 96.7% of my battery drain is from the Android System. There are 237 wakelocks in this!
Compare that with the amount of Wakelocks in my Launcher (GO) at 1, it looks a little bit suspect!

I too am on Google Play 4.3.11. I've force Stopped Google Play Services and have now rolled back to Play store version 4.0.25
Will let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Number of wakelocks is part of the story. The time awake is the key. In the last 10.5 hours my Android System has had 1441 wakelocks, has woken the phone 168 times, and kept it awake for less than 4 minutes. Google Services has had 336 wakelicks & woken it 96 times, but kept it awake for 7 seconds. When things went bad for me Google Play Services had actually kept it awake for 10.5 hours!

Good luck :)

Like Hadron said, waking up is one thing, but keeping awake is the kicker.

Waking the phone up for a couple of milliseconds could be something as simple as making sure your calendar is up to date and your contacts are synced. It's really when your phone is being held awake that the battery starts to get zapped.

Morning All

Thanks forupdating me on the Wakelocks, I didn't realise that time awake was the key!
As I mentioned earlier I done all that I was advised re google services & play store, left my phone overnight (wi-fi off, mobile data off, airplane mode on, power save mode on, brightness @ 10%) at full charge of 100%, woke up this morning and it's down to 47%!!!

Checked GSAM and 95.3% battery drain was on Android system, 1063 wakelocks but phone was only awake 2m 31s!

Google services listed as being awake for 1m19s.

I really don't know what else to do!!!

Cheers

Hmm. If you click on the wakelocks and look at them, does it say what they are for?

I've had my One since it became available at Verizon (23 Au g 13). The battery life during the first week was poor but it's much better now. A good part of that was probably due to the fact that I kept messing with it. :D I have also turned off wifi unless I need it...believe wifi will wake up every once in a while to search for a connection.

There's a few things in there to keep in mind. If you mess with your device a lot, you will get worse battery, like you mentioned. :p also, there's something called kernel settling, which happens as you use your device for the first few days; the kernel gets used to operating your device and becomes more efficient. (kind of an abstract concept, but I can try and explain further if you don't get it). Also, good point about the wifi

First let me say I love my One and do not think it has any problems, I am just trying to understand it better.

My question is: does your One lose batter charge when tuned OFF for long periods (like overnight)?

I've always kept my phones "on" at night under the impression that it was best for the battery. Wifi enabled, silent, not plugged in.

My One consistently loses about 5% of a charge (from 100%) between 9pm when I go to bed and 4am when I get up. I'm fine with that.

Last night, I decided to turn the phone off. It was at 77% (after a full day of "my" usage which is very light). When I started it up, the battery read 74%.

I realize that the displayed 77% might have been 76.50% and the displayed 4% might have been 74.49% but I was still surprised to see the drop.

Again, I don't think anything is wrong, I am just trying to understand my phone better.

And I'll do whatever makes the most sense for the health of the battery!

Thanks, kj

My phone used to take 6 to 7 hours to fully charge via mains, but now it doesney seem to charge at all and the red light no longer glows but flashes!

Is this a phone or charger issue or does the flashy light mean sommink specific? The phone does charge normally using vehicular 12v, but I don't like it because the electricity isney smooooth enough.

Could be either one. I had a charger that did that, but my phone actually had a notification it was the wrong voltage. I don't think it was really wrong voltage but a bad connector, since the cable was my HTC charging cable from my Evo3D. I would definitely try a different cable.

hi all just picked up my one a few days ago and absolutely love it!! ive been reading on this thread and it has answered a few of my questions...but it seems to me that this device takes forever to charge literally the percentage moves 5% in like a hour or so.just to let you know i rooted the phone right out of the box and loving every min of it! lol is this common for this device or do i need a more powerfull adaptor like a 10v instead of the 5v it comes with? thanks in advance and youll be seeing me on here a lot lol

You definitely don't need to put a higher-than-rated voltage across the charging pins! Stay within spec when dealing with Li batteries :)

The phone doesn't fast charge (I believe to maximise battery longevity), but with a mains charger mine charges in a few hours (never bothered timing it). Even via USB mine charges faster than you describe. You aren't streaming over 3G while charging or anything like that (i.e. using the power as fast as you put it in)?

If your 3G signal is strong, then I'd say yes,it shouldlast for a day.If the signal is weak & you have multiple apps constantly updating, then I'd guess no,you'd be hard pressed to find any ANDROID phone to last all day if a 3G/WI-FI signal is nowhere to be found or weak.

My one is on sprints network 3g is not very strong here maybe that's a big reason my battery life sucks, I have to charge whenever I get a chance or my phone will not make it through the day

That's par for the course on most any smartphone.

I usually get from 6 to 8 hours of screen on time on my Evo 4G LTE on wifi with a good cell signal.

I'm house sitting with wifi and my cell reception here is around -105 dBm, iow, atrocious - one bar or less - and now my battery is dropping like a rock.
