Root Droid Maxx Rooted?

Just one word of caution from my experience with the Bionic: If you ever want to install a future OTA update (and you probably will), you are much better off using Titanium Backup (or a similar app) to Freeze the bloatware rather than uninstalling it. The reason is that the updater process checks for the bloatware and if it doesn't find it, the update will fail. This happened to a lot of people on the Bionic. At that point the only option is to do a FXZ (if available), which is a huge PITA.

Of course you don't want to be taking any OTA updates right now if you want to root, since the update would likely patch the root exploit, but in the future once root access is stabilized it may be possible to maintain root through an update using apps such as Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. At that point the issue with uninstalled bloatware would come into play.

Just a heads up!

Apparently when we "disable" an app it is the exact same thing as freezing it through Titanium Backup because they were already "frozen" when I went to try and uninstall them.

That's correct, TiBu by default uses the "Disable" method for freezing now. You can also change it to the old method in settings, but there's not usually any need. The point I was making is that you don't want to outright uninstall the bloatware because then you can't restore it if needed to pass the update check.

There is supposed to be an update coming to fix camera problems, and I think I read something about dimming the capacitive buttons when the phone is in Dream mode - things like that.

I know that maybe this is just me, but, at this point, I would *much* rather have these things fixed than have root in a brand new device. In fact, this phone is so good that I don't think I really need root at all. It's kind of nice to have an Android phone that doesn't need it, finally.

Well, what's weird is that I uninstalled several apps (VZ Navigator, Verizon Tones, everything that had the word "Amazon" attached to it) via TiBu after installing the updated root method and SuperSU and the apps are still listed as Disabled. I rebooted the phone and sure enough, they are all back. What am I doing wrong?

From what I have read, this new root method does not yet allow full read/write access to the system partition, which could explain what you are seeing. You can also disable most bloatware apps via the Manage Apps screen in settings, no root required. I have about 20 apps disabled this way.

I thought he fixed that in the updated release? I'm not complaining, just wondering. I need to go pay my pledge!

Bearcat, how's the tethering working? Any issues? That's really the only motivation I have for rooting this beast.

Ditto I haven't found a wifi tether that works even rooted, have the Ultra, it's the same phone just a smaller battery.

Full root is available now. You can uninstall all the system bloat.

It's failed for me. It goes to the robot with a red ! over his tummy.

I haven't actually tried to install it with adb yet though.

I did attempt with terminal emulator but it says it's already been installed.

I clicked install, it asked to reboot, it rebooted (without the annoying "Droid" sound). It came back on, then it rebooted again, and went to the robot with the !

im in no hurry on this phone to start flashing but ill certainly be unlocking the bootloader when its available so i can down the road...

root isn't the same as unlocked bootloader or a custom recovery (as i've been recently informed). it means being able to write to the root partition including the system partition. so full root means being able to actually do that.

dang that's frustrating. there was a comment in the thread that someone tried to do it without using ADB and it didn't work. tried with ADB and it worked. so you may want to try that way. you can install a terminal emulator app on the phone so you don't have to setup the android SDK on your PC if that's what's stopping you

The mini will work fine.

For those that are just trying to install the app from the phone do you have unknown source checked so the apps are allowed? I think it is under developer options.

Just want to throw this PSA out there.

AS OF THIS POST. There is no custom recovery or an FXZ for the Droid Maxx, Droid Ultra and the Droid Mini. So if you plan on messing around you better know what you are doing because there is no way to recovery you device.

That's as custom as it gets. Moto tool that let's you flash fxz while retaining the data partition. A few posts up from that are the raw fxz files that you flash to completely restore. Things are moving fast

yep, that's what i was trying to link to (was on my phone). it was posted about 40 mins BEFORE the PSA though. So i think the real PSA is keep updating that XDA thread for up to date info.

I read today on Droid Life that the latest OTA update with the camera fix for the Moto X has already been rooted by JCase. Since the software on the Moto X and our phones are pretty much identical, I assume this method will work for us, once we get the camera fix too.

once you're rooted you need to download titanium backup and rom toolbox from the play store. those apps allow you to remove most bloatware once you're rooted. although the best way is to just flash a ROM that doesnt have any of the bloatware. but, it seems no developers have made any roms for our droids yet
