Root Root from Gingerbread to ICS?

Hi, yesterday I rooted my Blaze, no problems, I was wondering if I could go from straight rooted gingerbread directly to ICS update? Would there be any problems, possible risks? Or should I unroot? And if I do go to ICS, can I get cyanogenmod 10, because yesterday when I tried to install the ROM, it was stuck in an endless reboot loop, until I unrooted with stock tar on odin. Any help?

First off Welcome to the forums!!! :D

Second, don't take an OTA Update when rooted. It can make your phone do weird things. Easiest way to update is to flash an updated rom.

I personally don't have your phone, so the step by step to get you there eludes me as well. If the update has Firmware updates, a rom flash alone won't update that.

I assume since it's a Samsung device, all you needed to do to root was unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and get the Superuser app, correct?

The troops have been called to help, sit tight and we'll get you fixed up. :)

Welcome to the forum.

Yeah as mentioned don't accept the ota. The ota updates need to boot into stock recovery to flash so if you're rooted and running a custom recovery it can really mess things up. So as said either flash a custom Rom for your device or flash the updated firmware with Odin from
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/you'll need to root again. Or flash the firmware with mobile Odin and check the keep root option so you don't have to reroot

Sorry I can't give specifics as I don't own your device but it's the same theory across all Samsung:)

Thanks guys I will try

Edit: Changed my mind, keeping Gingerbread. Final question: Say I'm going to flash/get a new ROM, and I didn't start out with one except stock. I don't get it when they say 'factory reset' or 'wipe all data' if something goes wrong, then how would I access my backup if I lost all apps? And if I did factory reset, how would I then look for the .zip ROM to select in my phone? It's just so odd and fuzzy to me.

I have cwm installed and have a backup incase i do not like something.

Also, I have mobile odin but I heard from the xda forums or something, some guy who was dumping because his device was not supported got his phone bricked or something. Is this true? I don't want my phone to have any problems.

On an unrooted phone a factory reset will be just that as it will wipe all data from your phonesuch as apps, pictures, videos etc. A factory reset/ wipe data with a custom recovery is different though. It will only wipe the downloaded apps from your phone. All other data like your pictures, videos, titanium backup and nandroid backups will stillbe there. So to restore your apps after a reset you'd just need to download titanium from the play store again and then use this to restore the rest.

It can't hurt to be on the cautious side though and copy all your videos, pictures and the clockworkmod and titanium backup folders to your pc just in case.

Is your model number the sgh-t769? As far as I can tell from the description it isn't supported by mobile Odin.

Ok nevermind. Sorry I keep bouncing from question to question but not actually doing anything. I unrooted and factory resetted. I want to upgrade to ICS. I plug the Blaze into Kies (sgh-t769) and says device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via kies.

Current Firmware Version: PDA:LB7 / PHONE: LF4 / CSC: LB7 (TMB)

I see under tools 'emergency firmware recovery' if I do that will there be any effect? I'm not sure to do it, since im not in an emergency....

Plus you guys are very heplful :) So thanks
