I have a Samsung Duos GT-18262 on which the Android System version is 4.1.2
I have many troubles with it related to what I would class as memory leaks/resource shortage. I have been to about five Samsung shops and finally today to their service centre in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in an attempt to get the system updated. The last retailer I went to said there was an update but only the service centre could install it. The service centre engineer said that Samsung does not yet support the newer version and do not install. I was warned that if I install myself to expect that the WiFi will not work properly or at all! The phone is only three months old.

To make matters worse, I have an android pad which is even more troublesome with version 4.1.1 on it and I want to update for that same reason. But based on Samsung's warning about WiFi (my pad useless without it) I fear updating it. And in its case, I am my own and only available support for this now.

Help/advice most welcomed!

Hello and welcome to Android Forums paulhen! :)

You have the Samsung Duos GT-i8262 which is the dual sim card variant of the Samsung Galaxy Core, GT-i8260, and is therefore not covered by this forum.

The correct forum for your model of phone is...

Samsung Galaxy Core LTE

but I have just visited there and it seems to be a very lonely place indeed.

I will try my best to help you. Could you type *#1234# into your dial pad and post the information, exactly, as it is shown on the screen.

Many thanks for your willingness to try to assist. The version query returns:
AP: I8262XXAMG6
CP: I8262DXAMH1
CSC: I8262OLBBMH2

I was shocked to learn that Android cannot be upgraded on any device by any user as updates are released, but that they are constrained by having to wait for the device manufacturers to release their customized updates compatible with their customized version of their installed android system. Had I known this before, I would never have bought android devices (phone and two pads) in my trying to stay was from Microsoft product.

Don't worry paulhen, palmtree5 left me a breadcrumb trail to follow.

AP: I8262XXAMG6
CP: I8262DXAMH1
CSC: I8262OLBBMH2

The above tells me that you are on the latest Android firmware that has been released for your CSC code, OLB. This is Android 4.1.2 and it is unlikely that there will be any updates to 4.2.2, 4.3 or 4.4.2, (KitKat). High end phones such as the Galaxy S2, S3 and S4 are usually updated for a period of 18 months to 2 years, when they reach their EOL, (End of Life). Mid range to low end phones are less well supported.

I was shocked to learn that Android cannot be upgraded on any device by any user as updates are released, but that they are constrained by having to wait for the device manufacturers to release their customized updates compatible with their customized version of their installed android system.

The Android firmware has to be tailored to each manufacturers model of phone to take into account the hardware such as CPU, GPU, chipset, camera, etc: Therefore, releases depend on the manufacturer unless your root your phone and flash a custom ROM.

As for your present predicament... I would suggest, after backing everything up, doing a Factory Reset on the phone. This option is in Settings and will wipe your phone of user data and you will need to sign in to your gmail account again.

Failing that, you can download your stock Samsung firmware for the i8262 from SamMobile by entering, "i8262OLB", into the Search box and flashing it yourself with the PC firmware, Odin. Details of how to do this are shown in #1.5 of 23 Galaxy S4 models - know yours? The procedure is the same.

Ironass - thanks for following the breadcrumbs and for your great efforts in assisting. At least I know where I stand with my phone.

I must say that your comment about the EOL of high end phones fits my very jaundiced view of the industry and those related, as being _________________
