New cell phone without renewing contract

Hi!

I'm not tech-savvy or know much about cell phones, but I need help.
I wanted to upgrade my Droid X to Samsung S4. I'm in family plan with Verizon, but when I wanted to upgrade phone, my plan will change. I have unlimited data for $30 each month, if I get only 2 GB it'll be $30. That's insane!

So, I wanted to just get the phone without renewing my contract. How do I go about doing that?
I've browse through Amazon.com, and found some, but do i need to get an unlocked phone? If i get a phone from Amazon.com or Ebay, will all my contact info be transferred over to Samsung S4?

Thanks for all the help, any info will be helpful! I know I have alot of questions!

Here is a link for the current S4's on swappa.com, see if there's one there that interests you. I really like swappa.

You don't have to worry about anything, just ask questions and negotiate a price.

You'll have to call Verizon CS or go in and get a SIM card, the Droid X doesn't have one to switch. It'll be free if you go to a corporate store.

When you sign in to the new phone with your GMail address all of you contacts will transfer...it's magic

Your contract won't be renewed, your plan won't change. Easy peasy. I've done it a lot.

Make sure you get insurance on the device . you will be thankful cause if the device fails that u buy you will be rewarded with a certified working one to use .

SIM card stuff. All the 4g phones have them with Verizon.

What is a 4G SIM Card?A Verizon Wireless 4G SIM Card is a small “smartcard” that is inserted into a Verizon Wireless-Certified 4G Device. The Verizon Wireless 4G SIM Card contains the 4G subscriber profile, which includes detailed information that the Verizon Wireless-Certified 4G Device needs in order to work on the Verizon Wireless network. Hello!

So, I've decided to get S4 at amazon.
But will I be able to transfer my info from Droid X to S4 (i.e. cell #, contacts)?

Also, is the correct phone to get under Verizon? I have a family plan and I don't want to change my family plan. Does it need to be unlocked?
