Hey Fellow Android Addicts,

My contract is up for renewal as of today and i'm in a dilemma. I like the look of the S5 but this Knox thing is scary.

Can anyone explain Knox and what it does, please. I like to root my phones but i heard it's really hard to root now and it's really risky, this would be a deal breaker if i can't root it or it's going to be troublesome to do so

Also, the root section seems pretty quiet so are people having trouble rooting / flashing etc? I had a look at XDA about the S5 and there are a few ROMs available but that place is a mine field and they don't seem to like people with limited Android knowledge (me) asking lots of questions ;)

Cheers for any replies.

I know how xda got such a bad rep for people who are new, they simply want you to read first, but on topic the phone just came out give it like 2-3 months, most likely sooner because I heard a couple of them bootloader is unlocked namely tmobile. That opens the door with swiftness to develop on. I think it has root and custom recovery. Roms and kernels and hacks come later.

Chainfire has rooted it already it depends on what version of the phone you get. There is the SM-G900 F which is the qualcom version and the SM-G900 H which is the octacore version wich if the s4 is anything to go by makes it more diff to unroot im also considering an upgrade just cant decide on whether to get this or the sony Z2. If i do happen to get the s5 I am trying to get it from the states as in india i get the SM-G900 I which is the same crap octa core version which im currently stuck with on the s4. So if you do get the s5 check the version before buying. Link to the original root post on xda below

Verizon and ATT versions are not rootable at this time. Actual rooting is easy, flash chainfires cf-autoroot with odin. Then flash the newest twrp, cwm, or philz recovery to flash your custom rom. As of May 11th the 900p (sprint) has 2 custom roms based off stock that are very stable... all rootable versions have at least a handful of roms such as CM, omega, and a few others. Knox does not make it any more difficult to root, but it does trip a counter that is impossible to reset at this time, but this only effects your samsung warranty. Most if not all carrier techs do not check this counter and will often replace your phone under warranty at the store, and they definitely will replace on your insurance if you it. Sprint techs are 9noy required to check for water damage and verify that the stock operating system is installed, so if you need to return it to the carrier, make sure to flash back to completely stock. Only use xda to download files, and use over here to ask questions. Even if you can get questions answered there they tend to want more information that you understand.

Browsing through this thread (very interesting btw) I noticed mentions to other fora, how new folks are treated and removal. At Af, we take care of new folks. As a former staffer, I can tell you you need not ever fear removal unless you seriously and continuously break rules. Illegal stuff's a no no and we try to be very kind and helpful to new people. So, ask your questions. No one will give anyone a hard time. If they do, it's reported and dealt with. :)

I have the galaxy s5, SM-G900I and it's def not an octa core, only a quad core.

That being said I'm looking into rooting my s5, I have a bit of experience rooting with my old s2 but this is the first time I've come across this locked boot loader stuff can anyone point me in the direction of more info about it? My s5 is the SM-G900 I bought in Australia unlocked and outright with the codes:
AP: G900IDVU7AND2
CP: G900IDVU1AND2
CSC: G900IXSA1AND2

Anyone know the status of my boot loader and if my phone is easily rootable ?

Yes, it's easily rootable. See this thread on XDA. Post #3 has the file to download for your model. Rooting will trip the Knox flag and void any warranty though.

Thank you, but I did not see a KNOX app in my app list and I didn't see any answers to my second question in the article or comments. Can anyone speak to that? I could assume that this method fully removes KNOX, but I have a feeling it is more deeply integrated than

nope its not possible to remove knox before rooting, after you root and trip the counter and flash a custom rom its possible to remove knox(the counter is still tripped).

Omega Rom can be flashed only with a custom recovery.
This mean the knox will be triggered and your warranty will be void. details for knox below

Thanks for that. The article basically confirmed my fears. Wish I had researched KNOX before pulling the trigger on the S5 since rooting is very important to me.

As far as warranty, I pay monthly for Total Equipment Protection (sprint). Might that be my saving grace if I have a hardware problem, or do they send those to Samsung for repair?
