Help Memory problems- swap? Or fix app?

Lately I've been getting some low memory errors, particularly from the gallery application. "Not enough space, delete unnecessary items. such as downloaded software, pictures, videos and documents." My phone is currently running ND4, rooted and using links2SD to move as much as possible to an EXT4 partition on my SD card (the rest of the card is FAT32).

Last time this happened, it turned out some other app had temporarily stored some large files on my internal memory. Clearing those seemed to make everything normal again.
But this time, I can't seem to figure out why I'm getting the low memory error. Settings>storage says I have 183MB free internally. Oddly enough, when I connect to my computer via USB cable as camera (PTP), it shows me that the internal phone memory (as opposed to the storage card memory) only has 80MB free. Weird. But either way, that's not really all that low, is it? That should be enough for the gallery app to open! (should I be concerned that the numbers don't line up? Why would that be?)

Meanwhile, I tried installing an alternative gallery app (quickpic). Problem is, there are certain parts of the OS that are tied to the stock app and always try to open it, such as using the camera or viewing an MMS attachment. It doesn't let me choose an alternative program to open those things, so I still get greeting with the annoying low memory error.

My next idea was to try and swap internal for external. This is proving more complicated than I thought. I downloaded the Root External 2 Internal SD app, but I don't think I'm using it right. Free internal memory hasn't changed in settings, and when I plug it into the computer in PTP, now it shows phone and storage card are the same! As if there's no SD card at all anymore!

I played around with some settings, then stopped to wonder if this would even fix my problem. I mean, am I really running out of internal memory if I have 80 or 184 mb free (depending on how you get the number)? Is there something wrong with the gallery app if I'm not seeing errors elsewhere? On that note, why aren't the free internal space numbers lining up?

Should I even bother swapping internal and external? HELP!

I had that same problem. I did 2 separate things that both helped, but your not going to like it. I had to wipe and start fresh and also wipe data/media (internal SD). I keep my phone set up so that a wipe isn't the end of the world. You could also try unlinking all apps and all files ( you may have to remove some if you don't have room) Too much tinkering with link2sd seemed to cause it. But for me it took unlinking all apps then factory reset then wipe data/media. Backing up all apps with titanium eases the pain a little. Told you that you wouldn't like it. I think someone else said that clearing data in google drive helped with that problem.
I doubt the swap will help.

Well, I now have nearly 300MB free on the internal storage, and the gallery app is working again. It just doesn't like it when there is less than 200 free I guess?

I removed a game one of my kids installed that is HUGE (Angry Birds Go- its ok but not worth the mount of internal data library it requires!) and I cleared out my whatsapp media storage.

Now all is right with the world again. I feel like swapping WOULD help, as it really just wanted to see more free memory. But so far, memory swapping has not been kind to me.

So deleting my whatsapp media was a mistake. I figured all that stuff was cloud based, but apparently I can't get my images and video clips back once I've downloaded it and deleted it.

Thankfully my wife is in most of the same groups (really just use it for family chat with relatives), so I can still recover them off her phone.

So I'm trying to use a folder forwarding app, GL 2 SD, which is designed specifically to move folder libraries to external storage with a link (I'm guessing this is what links2SD does with application files). I manually set up my whatsapp media storage to the external folder, but its acting strange. It seems best fit for reading from the linked folder and not so much writing. I can take my own picture and send it, but when someone sends me something and I try to download it, it ends up going nowhere and the image is lost. :(

So close... I refuse to just wipe everything, I'm getting somewhere here! Memory swap would probably work in the long run, but so far trying it has failed for me.

I was going to suggest foldermount. I never tracked down the app that was eating my storage. I don't mind wiping and starting over. With titanium, the app restore takes 5 minutes, then just random settings and xposed. Total about 15 to 25 minutes to re do everything. What if your phone died completely? Or you upgrade? I use nova launcher and it backs up my home screen setup too. So that comes right back (apps, widgets, etc). I used to be scared of a full format too, but then I told myself: its just a phone. A new setup isn't the worst thing that could ever happen, but as humans we are creatures of habit. Believe me I also understand getting your phone just the way you like it and not wanting to change. But I couldn't stand a device having that much power over me. Lol.

There's a lot of wisdom in that. Back in the days that I used to tweak roms more (we're talking, HTC Windows Mobile days) I would have install scripts that would automatically put everything back the way I wanted it (restore sms and missed call libraries too!), mostly because I was tweaking and flashing my own custom roms every other day. But it was a pain to maintain, and things kept changing on me. I'd always forget one important app or tweak and then realize when I needed it that I had to go set it up again. With Android, I started to set up something like that with Titanium Backup, but it got to the point that I decided I shouldn't have to hardwipe so often.

I'm finding that most of the time I thought something was borked, its fixable with a bit of patience. Your solution would probably have just built up again over time if nothing else changes.
