After handling my Incredible for a few days, I think I might take the plunge and buy insurance. Just wanted to see what you guys thought about ...

1. Whether it's worth it? I'm generally careful, but accidents do happen.
2. Whether I should go with Asurian ($6/month), Verizon's full coverage plan ($8/month) or a plan through SquareTrade ($144 for 2 years w/only $50 deductible)?

Thanks!:)
It comes down to how you use it: For instance, if you've never dropped or mishandled your phone, you just need the Extended Warranty. If you've never lost or had your phone stolen, then get SquareTrade. Otherwise get Asurion.

Have insured a number of phones with Square Trade. Fortunately, never had to submit a claim. If you change your phone during the coverage period, and cancel the policy, they refund a substantial portion of the premium paid. Not a bad deal at all.

I use Square Trade. I had a policy on my iPhone 3Gs, and received a check for replacement cost (minus deductible ), after it had a Root Beer spilled on it. Sent them the iPhone, and received the check in a week.

No complaints with Square Trade.

I went with verizons full coverage plan. They said the asurian insurance is only available for the first 12 months of the device. The full coverage is available for 24 months. Its only $2 more so i figured why not. Its the first device i've spent the money on to protect, but as much as i carry it around with me i figured i might as well insure it to be 100% sure i won't be without one for an extended period of time.

I just filed a claim through Asurion a month or two ago for my LG Dare. I had the phone for over a year and I only had the $4 or $5 insurance. They sent me a refurb, however...which kinda sucks.

is that $1.99 per month? Can you add that within the first 30 days?

Does the Verizon $8/mo. have a deductible?
Advanced Devices

  • $7.99 per month per covered device.
  • $89 non-refundable deductible per approved claim.
Someone on a Blackberry forum said anything with a touchscreen is considered "advanced" but I'm not completely sure about that.

I believe the $1.99 just extends the manufacturer's warranty. The $7.99 includes accidental damage and theft.

I purchased at Best Buy and they offered this or for a dollar more, you get Best Buy's insurance. No refurbs and no deductable. They cover water damage but not loss whereas Verizon's was the opposite. Anybody go with the Best Buy insurance?

Best Buy will swap out your phone for a loaner while it is sent in to be fixed/replaced. I also believe they need a credit card/bank card to put the loaner on then it would be refunded when the loaner is returned. I say go with the insurance from verizon or the other one everyone has been talking about

I'm going thru the best buy NIGHTMARE myself right now! Cracked a screen on my eris. Owned it 8 days... It's been 3 weeks now and its STILL in repair! Went there yesterday to try to resolve this. They in no uncertain terms will replace the phone no matter HOW long it takes!

BEST BUY SUCKS!!!!

I bought my Incredible thru Verizon. On Azurion now. I am SO over Best Buy! I will NEVER buy another thing from them!

I bought my phone at Best Buy and noticed on my online credit card statement next to the purchase it says if you pay your monthly bill online with a Citi credit card, you get free insurance on your phone.

i got my phone from amazon, but i would love to get in on this deal, i did not buy it using citicard sadly, how do i check if i qualify for this.

I have another option for you, and one that a lot of people seem to be unaware of.

You can get a personal articles insurance policy from most of the major insuance companies that are cheaper than verizon or squaretrade.

I got a personal articles insurance policy on my Incredible for $35 a year from State Farm. That covers everything, theft, accidental, whatever with no deductible or charge when you file a claim. Here's some more info on the subject from State Farms website:

Just thought I'd share...

Some good info here. I currently use Statefarm for my renters insurance. I will give them a call after work to see if I can add the personals insurance to my plan as well. Thanks

Verizon has a new option of getting a FRU (Field Replacement Unit) for $90. It's a like-new-refurb. You can do this once every 12 months without extending your contract. HTH.

Is that with or without insurance? If you don't need insurance for that, it seems like the best deal. If you have a $50 deductible, pay $8/mo, you hit $90 in a little over 4 months. If you're phone lasts longer than that, you're ahead.

I believe that is not entirely correct. FRU is usually the two-year price without rebate, certainly $90. For example, the FRU price for the Droid is $289.

You can get just the insurance through Verizon (Asurian, Verizon does not offer anything but extended warranty) for $6.00 (w/ 1 yr. warranty) without the $1.99 extended warranty (2 yr. warranty).

Also, if you purchase on an Amex Platinum or Centurion card, you get a 90 day lost/damage replacement insurance free.

I got more information from State Farm today. At one time they did insure cell phones but no longer insure cellphones or ipods in the state of NY. Apparently too many people were abusing it. For those that did get insurance through State Farm in other states, consider yourself lucky. I can't imagine it'll be around forever with all the insurance fraud out there.
My SF agent in Oregon told me the same thing. He said they stopped providing coverage on cell phones like...last month. Bummer.

I have Asurion insurance on my Incredible and if past experiences have taught me anything, insurance on my cell phones are a must.
I forgot my phone on my desk and went out to dinner with my girlfriend. While we were at dinner my girlfriend gets a call, and its from my cell phone. She thought I had pocket dialed her but I told her I forgot it at home, so we both sat there trying to figure out how it made a call. Turns out my dog got to the phone and called my girlfriend on accident while he was chewing on it. When we figured it out we both started laughing and went home to find the dog curled up with it on the floor. Insurance to the rescue, and a day or two later i had a new phone at my doorstep.

Hi everyone,

Excuse the ignorance, just trying to get a general idea of the differences between the insurance and the extended warranty. I am currently paying the $3.00/mth or whatever it is for the extended warranty.

Extended Warranty -- Damn, my phone doesn't work and I'm not sure why.

vs.

Insurance -- Damn, I seemed to have dropped my poor phone off this really big skyscraper, may I have another one?

That basically the general gist?
