I'm concerned about all the permissions apps have and would like to limit them.

But I'm not sure cyanogen is right for me.

Here are my questions:

1. Does cyanogen reduce battery life
2. Does cyanogen have extreme powersaver mode ?
3. Does it reduce the phones performance ?

If anything, CM improves and stretches battery life because you can remove all the crapware that manufacturers and carriers put on it. It doesn't have extreme power save mode that I know of, and I would say it runs faster than the original ROM. It will, however, remove the "Sense" feel, and replace it with the normal CM look, but you can get really beautiful themes for AOSP ROMS, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Try one of the many App Ops apps in the Play Store for adjusting app permissions.
While Cyanogenmod 11 is pretty stable every time I try and use it I just miss too many of the HTC Sense "Features". And the Sound and Camera quality suffer baddly in CM11, but that's just my opinion

Or install Xposed framework and run the Xprivacy module. I use it as it has a load of privacy features.

I tried doing that but the process failed because I don't have my phone configured to "s-off".

I don't know how to get it into that mode now because the firewater option does not work.

Are their alternatives to getting the phone into s-off ?

Sunshine.

Unless you're on Verizon and have taken the 4.4.4 update - then you'll have to wait for Sunshine 3.0.

You don't need S-Off to have it function. To install it without S-Off you may need to run it from a recovery.
