Root HELP! Lost LTE!

I have always flashed the APN fix in TWRP. Quick question, would editing and saving my 'apns-conf.xml' in /etc directly possibly work? Isn't that the file that ChangeAPN modifies anyway?
I have been able to save/move my apns-conf.xml file because I actually wanted to upload it to here for anyone else. however I cannot get it to allow me to access it from Windows. If I change the name the file seems to change (meaning - .xml to .txt) in such a way that I don't know if I would trust it. It's also weird in that what I see in the file DIRECTLY does not seem to correspond to what I see when I access it using changeAPN.

Can anyone tell me why ChangeAPN never works for me? Every time I open it it just says: "Access point name settings are not available for this user."

Only time I've encountered that message was when my radio was off.
Do you have any signal bars?

This wont work for everyone and sorry for the wall of text, but the following worked for me (calling and sms/mms after lte borked):

tldr: Play dumb on phone to vm/boost, get your msl, disable ehrpd and lte and run with 3g evdo rev A for now (yes thats what i said)

I only use my phone for calling and texting, only data i use is wifi based. I switched to an lg tribute after a bad flash and losing lte and having a flaky signal that cuts out every few minutes with ehrpd, and while its a nice phone its not a volt lol.

I tried everything to fix my volt, and i mean everything, even swapped out a known working uicc/sim from the tribute (yes i know, blah blah locked blah blah wont work, but im using the sim i got from the tribute in my volt right now after choosing to activate the meid from the volt with the tribute sim. Ehrpd 3g worked just like the volts sim did.) I ended up wiping out my carrier partition and messing with advanced data menus (which only screwed more things up) and still couldnt fix the flaky radio and no lte problem, so i decided to call vm and play dumb to get my spc to access even more advanced data menus.

Call virgin or boost, play along with them when they tell you to ##72786# and other stuff, after each thing they tell you to do, tell them that the phone is asking for a six digit code, and if they hesitate to give you your msl kind of dumbly say "oh, i guess its asking for something called an spc?" Thats what did the trick for me.

Once i got my msl, i went into the ##data# menu and disabled ehrpd and lte, and now 3g evdo rev A works great and i can finally call text and send and recieve picture messages again. 3g data seemed to work, i could access virginmobileusa.com no problem. At least my volt can be used now until we figure out a real solution to the problem.

Like i said, its not going to work for everyone, especially those who pay for data and want lte, but it might help a few of you. Its definitely something with the phone itself, either there is some setting i overlooked or my sim is fried after that bad flash, but the same symptoms arise with a new known working sim/uicc so it has to be firmware (on phone) based.

Probably worth noting (at least for any future Volt owners who screw up their data) that Boost shows you your MSL when you activate online, in case it doesn't activate properly and you need to manually input stuff.

Also wanted to say that the problem doesn't exist in the /carrier partition like I thought it did at one time. When you reactivate, even if you wiped out your /carrier like I did and ended up with lg as your carrier, ##786# and full reset with your msl will repopulate that partition and show your carrier again. Can't be the modem partitions either, reflashing the modem doesn't fix it. It has to be either a bad flash caused a hardware problem or an advanced data menu setting, which I'm leaning more towards the latter after the week or so straight i had of messing with things.

Note: I used DD and zeroed out my carrier partition because why not? My volt is broke already, DO NOT DO THIS THOUGH IF YOUR DEVICE IS WORKING FINE!

Also, I'm speaking of the issue where signal drops out every other minute and lte is completely lost but ehrpd still tries to connect. The kind that a simple APN flash won't fix. If your LTE works on a stock ROM or after the carrier apn zip flash, disregard what I'm saying completely, your issue is different from what I have and am chasing down.

Anyone else have the same issue I do? Please sound off here so I know who to brainstorm and try different ideas with.

Ok, my phone just triple posted the same response so I edited two of them and now they're all gone.

Anyway, this is EXACTLY what I was going through. It was driving me crazy because I seemed to be the only one. Everyone was offering up fixes and NOTHING worked. Something got fried when flashing CM12 but I have no idea what it was

I'm with you buddy. We will figure this out somehow, I'm not ready to give up on my volt yet. There has to be clear reason behind the problems we are having, and its gonna bug me till it gets figured out so I'm gonna stay on it.

Are you VM, boost or sprint prepaid?

I lost LTE a few days ago after flashing a new ROM.
Not the first time but it usually would come back if I restored stock. Not this time...
So I tried all the normal stuff, wiped everything flashed stock again, restored known good backups, auto-activating, and finally reverted to zv3 and updated to zv5 ota.
Still no go for LTE and my signal would drop and I was getting a red x over my bars every few seconds...
Ended up on the phone with VM for about 20 min. I told them i hadn't had 4g in the last 2 days. They had me to the typical stuff and when that didn't work I was sent to tech support where I was told to shut my phone off while he reset my account. Rebooted after that and still only 3g. He said that was all they could do and that after the process they did, it could take 48-72 hours for my LTE to come back! The tech said LTE has to determine my location before it will connect? I did not believe him and started asking questions on what reference number I need when I call back and if I would receive a credit...and just acted like my phone was way to slow to use and told him my wife's phone has LTE and is standing right next to me.... He did not budge and told me if LTE does not return in 48 hrs to call back. I couldn't spend any more time on the phone so I gave up.
Well later in the day I decided to root and return to cm12, stock blows on this phone after running L!
Get it all set up and restore a backup, flashed my apn fix and did the typical tweaks and low and behold LTE has come back!
I have since reverted back to stock and back to custom ROMs and LTE stays right there with me .
This all started last Friday and I called virgin on Saturday. Saturday night my LTE came back and it is now Tuesday.
I don't know why or what they did behind the scene but it work again and I have a strong stable LTE signal.

VM. I flashed the 3/16 build and permanently lost LTE. I was showing intermittent 3G but was only connected to 1xRTT. It would connect, drop out and then connect again. Over and over. I would show full bars of service, then have it drop out completely and show the red 'x' next to the bars, then full bars again.

Have you called VM?
This sounds very similar to my problem and it has been resolved

Yeah, they told me the same thing. They said there was a known "outage" in my area and to wait 48 hours. I pointed out that my wife's phone was connecting to LTE just fine with Virgin and they insisted I wait 48 hours before calling back. Well, 48 hours passed and still nothing. Long story short, I'm on my second Volt and LTE works just fine. I will not be flashing CM12 again.

I'm wondering if anyone on boost or sprint prepaid is having this happen?
I'm on Boost. I'm normally not in an LTE area, so I wasn't sure if I'd suffered the LTE bug or not. 3G is good enough for me, so I didn't really care either way. As it turns out, I did find myself in an LTE area today and it connected on both ZV5 and the 3/26 version of CM12. I'm pretty sure I've flashed back and forth between all of them but 3/20 and it doesn't seem to have screwed anything up for me. 3G's always a bit spotty here, but I can't say it's been any worse than it was before I ever rooted.

As good of a guess as any. Who knows. It's really weird though. I don't think I've ever seen so much variation in development quirks in a device. Some people have zero issues, some can't get rear camera to work, some lose LTE and get it back somehow, some like us just get the shaft. Really strange.

I'm starting to think that I may go back to a stock based kernel instead of caf for cm11 builds for this reason. The lg download tool seems to hit all of our needs with the stock ROM and kernel, so it wouldn't be a wild theory to think that stock kernel source and custom Roms should do us fine too.

I think I remember with the lg nexus 4 that early phones had a few LTE bands that they disabled I'm later runs. Memory may be fuzzy though, but if that's right it shows lg had a history of just throwing in whatever they have at the time without consistency.
