Help Lollipop woes

In short, I hate it.

  1. Hitting the recent apps button brings up every single app I've ever opened ever (I know this was a generic Lollipop bug and is fixed in 5.1).
  2. If I open any music app, minimize it, then open facebook, the web, my kindle app or any app tbh, after 5-10 seconds, music will stop and the music app closes.
  3. The new notification pull down is terrible.
  4. Persistent notifications appear on my lock screen so I'm presented with a Textra Quick Message notification whenever I open my phone (note, this is intermittent, the notiification appears on the lock screen about half of the time).
  5. I tried to video my son at his school sports day and couldn't get any sort of decent video because the screen turns off and stops recording after 30 seconds. Subsequent testing over the weekend shows this to happen about 75% of the time. It happens if I save video to the SD Card or internal memory.
  6. External Speaker volume has decreased about 50%. I have to turn the ringer volume up full to be able to hear my phone ring in another room. Headphone volume is fine.
  7. If I attempt to open an app, I'm lucky if it's ready and in a usable state 10-15 seconds after I've attempted to open it. Whilst the phone wasn't lightening quick before it was certainly quicker than this.
  8. Any app that's been hit with Material Design looks like a child has come at it with a bunch of felt tip pens.
The only redeeming feature I've seen so far is Smart Lock.

I took an OTA initially, but since then I've factory reset which improved things slightly (removed some lag an stuttering). I've also done a clean install using an unbranded ftf file.

Am I alone in these issues?

I've hated it since initial install and was adamant I wanted to roll back straight away, but I decided to give it a few weeks to see if I could iron out any of the niggles. Unfortunately no. When I get the chance (Wednesday night), I'll be rolling back to KitKat.

If this has come across as a rant, it's not intended that way, I'm genuinely curious as to whether others are having the same problems as me.

As you know I'm not on a Sony, so this is fwiw -

On #4, try to long press the notification - you may get an option to block or prioritize.

I like the behavior in #1 and will be sorry to see it go.

Lollipop ART ought to result in apps opening at ludicrous speed. The only thing that I can think is going on, and this may also help the music problem, is that they have the out of memory minfree values completely hosed and the launch delay is being caused by some chicken dance with swapping apps to cached storage to get sufficient free ram for the app launch.

A quick and dirty test of that theory might be to try developer options, advanced, and limit background tasks to 3 or 4. If that shows promise try any of the zillion OOM minfree setting apps and adjust from there. (Developer options doesn't require root, changing OOM minfree values does.)

RAM Truth or System Panel, both from the Play Store, may shed some light on the available vs free ram situation and aid in the adjustments.

You are not alone.
The UI is actually starting to grow on me, at first I wasn't sure about it as, like you say, I thought it looked very childish, but I think it's quite easy finding things with the new notifications etc. I think they have gone for something and not really thought about it in any way, too big an overhaul, hopefully in the next version they will roll back to something more like Kit-Kat. And as you say the smart unlock is a hell of an improvement with face detect.
My biggest gripe with Lollipop is the lag you mention, I really don't think I have ever been lucky enough to have an app open in 10-15 seconds. Also even when going back to home pressing the home button you can be sat there for several seconds waiting for the icons etc to actually arrive on screen. Do you find that? I suppose I'll try a wipe and reflash, just hate the backing up etc and then gambling on if all my settings will be restored. I know there is a major memory leak in the Lollipop framework but I heard that Sony fixed it anyway in their ROMs as there is a patch out there somewhere that fixes and it says sorted in there. I'm not convinced.
I am still having major battery drain compared to Kit-Kat too, I HAVE to charge it every night now, I was able to let it run through the night not on charge and perhaps charge it throughout the day instead. Now even if I charge it in the day I have to charge at night to be safe anyway.
I've not noticed any issues with Camera. Could it be ROM related or are you just running stock?
My apps often close themselves, even if it is just one thing running, eg, Deezer, got earphones in and suddenly will stop.
I think you could be right with the sound. I am using Viper mod but I think it's still not up to as good as was.

In all I think Lollipop was a huge disaster for Google to be honest. They must know how much of a flop this has been and surely working on a major update to fix all this and actually make it smother and faster as promised...will have to wait and see...

Thanks.

I've tried limiting background tasks to 3 or 4. No dice.

I open an app, I'll be presented with a white screen and my device locks up for 10-15 seconds. What's stupid is I can be in the email app, open a link from an email, read it, back out of the browser and it will take an age to revert back to email.

In a whatsapp conversation with Mrs Presidente, I send a message, go back to the home screen, she responds seconds later, I open via the notification and I'm presented with a white screen.

RAM Truth shows the attached

I'm not rooted (and to root, I'd need to rollback anyway) so developer options is all I have.

Sorry @SavageRobot , you got in there whilst I was typing.

Deezer is the specific music app I have issues with, but it happens if I'm using my own MP3's in the stock app too.

Same thing happens when I hit the home button too.

Battery life is iffy for me, it's not terrible, but it is definitely worse than KitKat.

I'm stock, so any issues are of Sony/Google's making.

In a way, I'm glad you're having similar problems as it means there's a bigger issue (potentially) and it's not just my handset.

This is crazy.

We both have 2 GB RAM, both have about the same Available and Free, you have a Snapdragon 800, I have the 801 (specifically the MSM8974AB). Not enough to explain the huge difference -

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7846/...-snapdragon-800-and-801-clearing-up-confusion

Mine screams on stock, unrooted Lollipop 5.0.2 (vendor modified).

I know it doesn't help but this has to be on Sony's side so hopefully they'll update it quickly. :(
