Actually if I'm understanding the question correctly, i think it does, but I think the other person would have to have it turned on as well. Under Chat Settings in messaging there is a "send read receipt" setting. Since I and my wife have ours turned on, it says "delivered" and "read" by each text we send each other.

Is that for SMS? Or other messaging apps? SMS, by its very design, doesn't support read receipts. On my Nexus 6, I do see an option for delivery receipts - not read receipts
