Looking for a Note 4

Greetings,
I've owned a Galaxy S4 on Verizon for going on 4 years now. It's starting to show its age and is going to be in need of replacement in the near future. I am strongly considering trying to find a Note 4 that is either new, refurb, or in used and good condition.
I know the Note 4 isn't the latest and greatest (I almost pulled the trigger on a Note 7 last summer and am now glad I didn't), but I think it will serve my needs just fine for at least a couple of years, especially if I upgrade the battery with a new one. One of the reasons I'm considering the Note 4 is because the battery can be replaced.

I'd be interested in any thoughts from current Note 4 owners before I go down this path.

Specifically, is the Note 4 still a good device, or am I making a mistake replacing an old device with a different old device?

Any advice on where to look for a Note 4 would also be appreciated. The thought of purchasing a cell phone off e-bay with all of the conflicting information that appears in the listings has me concerned. Some are listed as "new" but they don't provide the original packaging or accessories. There are a lot of sellers and descriptions to try to wade through. Any guidance would be helpful.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

I have been a Note 4 user for two years now and I have not regretted the purchase in the past and still don't. Not being in any way inspired by any of the new offerings from Samsung, mostly due to the non removable batteries, I am fully intending to keep my Note 4 for a long as I can. I would have no issues with buying a new Note 4 if my current device was to meet the floor a little to aggressively or should the gods of computer technology come to usher my device to Valhalla.

That said, if you want to see a newer OS than Marshmallow, then you may want to go for a newer device. I would not expect to see any further support from any source after the end of the year (although I may be pleasantly surprised). So, you may end up having to deal with unpatched security issues sooner or later. I am not too bothered by this, but you may be.

With regards of where to get one. I would look for a reputable seller on Amazon. You can get lucky on EBay, but you can also get unlucky. I personally have had only good experience with purchasing phones on EBay, but I have also been burned when buying other items. I guess you have to decide for yourself how much risk you are willing to take. Now, there is an added complication since you are a US resident (I guess from your profile image). You will need to get a Note model that works with your network. Perhaps a reasonable idea would be to go to your local carrier shop and ask if they have one. Then you can test it before you buy.

Good luck...

Regards,
Eric.

I agree with touringhaggis, no replaceable battery no new phone. Phil
that is exactly why I am interested in the Note 4 vice the Note 5. I can live more easily with a previous version of android more than I can live with a non-replaceable battery. I am currently on battery numbers 5 & 6 with the G4. I always travel with a fully charged spare battery. Nothing better than watching the iphone fans scrambling in the airport for power outlets. When my battery craps out I replace it with a fresh one with no drama.

Battery technology has improved significantly over just the last few years - so being able to replace a bum battery isn't the issue it once was. And modders want the ability to pull the battery in case of a bootloop... but rooting and ROMming is less important (and more difficult) now. I skipped the Note 5 because Samsung eliminated the SD slot, forcing me to use the cloud or take my chances with internal memory (which I refuse to do). That's why I'm stuck with the Note 4 until the Note 8 comes out.

There is still nothing like the security of having a fully charged battery in your pocket just in case, and being able to swap it in a few seconds, it's small and slim and takes up no room in your pocket unlike those battery booster thingymajigs! Also I am on my third battery now, if it was non removable I would be on my third phone, bit of a difference in cost. I jhave personally never understood why anyone could object to being able to replace their battery, for whatever reason. Phil

I picked one up yesterday locally for $200. I am of the same opinion regarding the non removable battery issues as those who posted here. The problem remains that rechargeable batteries eventually wear out, and once they get to where they won't hold a charge, a device with a non-replaceable batter is borderline useless.

When Samsung, in their infinite stupidity removed the replaceable battery on the Note 7 I should imagine a lot of people went to the LG V20, I would have joined them but it is not available in the UK. Phil
