Help with remote app for tv box

Hi guys I just got a h96pro+ tv box, remote is terrible so I'm looking for an app to control it via Samsung s6, which apparently is a lot harder than you would think. Can anyone help?

Have tried a couple but can't seem to connect them, could it be because my TV box is running off a wired connection and my S6 is obviously on wifi?

Even something as simple as unified remote, which I was using for touch input on my laptop would do...

Maybe a reason. Do you know if both the wired Ethernet and WiFi are on the same subnet? Because if they're not, the box and phone will not be able to communicate and send data packets each other, not unless you setup the appropriate port-forwarding for the devices. Is there multiple routers in the network?
