Root [How-To] Install SPRecovery on unrooted 2.1 OTA

Exactly!

Yes, you will stay at 2.1, and you will not be rooted. What you will have is SPRecovery, which will allow you to load any other ROM.

So if you want to stay at the 2.1 OTA with root, you just follow the steps in this thread to load that ROM:

http://androidforums.com/all-things...completely-stock-proper-root-su-baseband.html

Or try any number of other ROMS found all over the forum.
I just installed it, now do I need to install the update too or can I just start using ROMS

If you have SPRecovery installed (power off the phone, power it on while holding 'x' on the keyboard - if the screen comes up and you see SPRecovery 0.99.3b), then yes, you can install any ROM you want.

So I can get any mod I want and just store it on the Scard and mount it later? because when I try to do the ESE81Update.zip I get message like this, E: can't poen /scard/update.zip (no such file or directory)???? I tried renaming it and everything...where can I get some good mod's.. thanks Fabolous for the help

you have to rename it to update.zip, and place it right on your sdcard, not any folders

also, by default, windows hides file extensions, so you may just have to rename it to update, because if you name it to update.zip, it will actually be update.zip.zip

Do I ready need to install it?because I just brought some apps and I don't want to lose them.

you were right cause when I changed it on my macbook it was 2 zips....

ok, i'm getting stuck at flashing the SBF... i get the following error immediately after clicking Start: "Failed Flashing process. Failed Flashing process. (0x7100); phone connected" i've flashed various SBFs multiple times all without a single issue until this particular one. i did check the md5sum and it is correct. i did find that i couldn't leave the SBF in my \users\gary\Downloads directory for some reason (Start would never become available). i moved the SBF to \ and Start is available but, like i stated above, it fails immediately. i can reboot the phone and all is well so nothing gets f'd up. any advice?

I'm having the same problem. Did you find a solution?

i also had this problem, i just reinstalled the drivers.

make sure to open RSDLite BEFORE plugging in your phone also, i think the drivers look for a program to link your phone to, so if RSD isn't running, it doesn't do anything

I had updated drivers and had RSD Lite running before I turned my phone on. It didn't work. I found a solution on another forum. The trick is to move the sbf file to the root of your C: drive. I have no idea why that worked, but it did. I tried it from my Downloads directory and it didn't work. I moved the file to the root of C: and it immediately worked. I have no explanation.

Additionally, once you have SPRecovery, you can just root your OTA 2.1 (no need to flash another ROM), though this requires you to be competent with adb.

These are the instructions, thanks to samedroidsex.

**If you're having issues with the chmod commands, try using /system/bin/chmod instead, i.e. "/system/bin/chmod 6755 /system/bin/su"**

Props to the DM team! This is a sick release. And all you unrooted 2.1'ers out there, enjoy SPRecovery.

Thanks Fab...this worked great for me and was so easy.
All I had to do was extract the zip file into the directory I was running ADB from and it worked like a charm.

Thanks for this. It was starting to bug me.

Does this process reflash your phone entirely? (ie. all apps and settings gone.) The RSD guide the OP links to says it does with that .sbf file.

Installing SPrecovery does not wipe your apps and settings. It is just the first step toward rooting your phone. Once you have root access on your phone, then you can install custom ROMs, which will wipe your apps and settings. I used Astro to backup my apps to my SD card and quickly restore them.

Got it working for those who need to know

1. Install Android SDK
2. Follow instructions up to mount /system
3. adb usb

  • adb devices (to verify)
  • adb shell (to verify you get #)
  • if you don't get # don't bother going forward
4. adb push su /system/bin/su
5. adb push Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
6. adb shell

  • /system/bin/chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
  • /system/bin/chmod 644 /system/app/Superuser.apk"
7. Reboot and you'll have root
8. Install tethering? Forget it... no netfilter...

I hang on adb shell ..... so I'm not really sure what's going on. ???

Are you doing this with the phone in recovery mode? Do you have the Android SDK set up on your computer? Do you have the Motorola drivers installed?

Yes, I booted into SPRecover and mounted system.

I have the Android SDK set up. I took many updates. Including the USB driver. I put everything I needed in the Tools folder and ran directly from that folder thru Command Prompt.

Moto Drivers are installed - I flashed the SPRecovery on using RSD Lite. If I had the wrong ones, I would not have been able to use RSD Lite right?

Weird.
