Sure, it's a gesture feature that removes all on screen buttons replacing them with a swipe up action instead giving you a true full screen all of the time. You just swipe up where the buttons would be to access that function.
Try it out, go into your phones Settings page and then Display, Navigation bar. Now select Full Screen Gestures and toggle the button "off" on Gesture Hints.

Thanks JAy3001.
How do you know where the screen buttons would be if you have removed them?
If possible, send screen shots of what your screen looks like
Sure. See pics... if you want to see where the buttons are keep the gesture hints turned on, you can see them in my second picture.
These are great to have on to begin with, bit like training wheels until you are use to how the gesture system works. For me I wanted full screen all the way.

Haha, look closely. At the bottom of the 2nd image you will see 3 white bars, these are your gesture hints and they pulse upwards when you swipe up to indicate activation.

Do you mean the narrow last row of buttons (three-bars/circle/less-than) is missing with the new feature? But the white gesture bars take their place? How much screen real estate are you really saving as seems narrow bar? It's already a giant long screen (too long in my opinion - I think the newer 9 and 10 are shorter but fatter, although Note 8 width is perfect and wider would be bad)
Yeah, not missing. By using the options I described you can disable them so that you have a nice clean full display and no buttons getting in the way.
The white bars only take their place if you enable Gesture Hints otherwise nothing. You gain the space seen in the first pic, however it is not usable.
Crumbs, i use to have a nexus 6 and that had the same length screen as the S8+ yet wider.. too wide for even my monkey hands to reach fully across the screen one handed. So although the S8+ took a little while to get use to I love it much more so than the nexus 6 screen. You can make the screen feel less long by reducing the number of icons displayed, but I like the hires nature of my setup.
When turning off your morning alarm, all you have to do is swipe anywhere on screen, whereas in past you had to hit the X which could be a challenge when awakening.
Similarly, when answering a phone call, you can swipe in any direction from the green button, whereas prior one had to swipe horizontally right direction.
