Eris Likely Won't Get 2.2

isnt one of the ota's or leaks labeled desire. just what i thought of when i posted that, im sure you guys are right though...

Right, I believe that the Eris, when it was in development, was code named the Desire. When Verizon decided to release it as the Droid Eris instead, HTC apparently decided to re-use the name for the current Desire for the phone that they had code named the Bravo.

yeah in the grand scheme of things most people have no idea what "1.5" "2.1" and "2.2" are...nor do they care. they have an eris cause they like how it looks, features, etc.

of the people who do know the difference...well...they are here...lol

O and they named it the eris cause eris is the last 4 letters of desire backward....OooOooOO

It doesn't really matter. Devs are already working on stabilizing Froyo to run on the Eris.

It took HTC and Verizon FOOOOOOOREVER to update Sense for an OTA.

What did we learn?

We learned that if you want an upgrade, just root and run a ROM with the features you want.

Right now, I'm running the OTA 2.1, but I'm seriously considering a hard switch to LauncherPro if it stops crushing my battery. Further, when we get a ROM up that has a working version of Flash, there's NO WAY I will be able to resist. So, I'll root and and have my Flash.

In sum, Froyo WILL be available for the Eris. If you want it, root and take it. You paid for the phone, don't wait on HTC and Verizon unless you're prepared to wait a long long long time (if at all).

Nope, I'd venture to say that most users are only vaguely familar with "HTC". They got their phone from Verizon. They call Verizon for help. They call Verizon to complain.

Ok sure lets use that logic. What will happen when they call verizon? The rep will inform them that HTC decided not to make the update, even though verizon would like to have it for their customers. Who looks bad again? Checkmate.

You forgot the part where whatever tech you talk to gives you a different story on any given day..

Probably the same as mine: "Why are we still eating with sticks? Europeans showed us the fork centuries ago."

I thought "我們為什麼仍然吃着用棍子? 歐洲人顯示了我們叉子世紀前" looked really familiar. :D

But, back to the topic, mmmm...frozen yogurt. (You'll notice I AM on probation)

I was priding myself in dialoging with you despite your apparent n'erdowell, malcontent with few redeeming qualities reputation.

I could care less about handset specific official OS updates. I was running wm 6.5 long before the pathetic "official" update when I had the verizon Omnia. I had the latest BB OS on my storm LONG before it was official. I, as well as many others, have had android 2.1 LONG before the official update even came out. I leave it up to the individual talents of the cooks on several websites that could really care less about official anything. Besides, what good is waiting and waiting so long just to get an official that has all the carrier bloat, are usually slower and, as far as android goes, is NOT rooted? I have lost almost all faith in carriers attempt at putting out official updates in light of recent verizon screwups...

Yes it might not get them more sales but it may build brand loyalty. And imo thats even more important than a few sales they may gain because of it. Who looks bad if it doesn't come? Verizon? Nope. Google? Nope. HTC looks bad.

HTC has been making Windows Mobile phones for a long time. How often have they come out with any more than a single firmware update for them (if that)? It's a huge effort to get something nebulous and unmeasurable like brand loyalty. Since my guess is that the great, great majority of Eris users (i.e., those who do not post on a forum like this) were actually hassled a bit by the OTA update, I think that HTC has very, very little to gain from working on an update for the Eris. There is probably nothing to lose, but developing this update must be pretty costly.

They are far more likely to spend time working on FroYo for the Incredible and the EVO.
