switching to Gboard info

I have no experience with Samsung's keyboard, but I do like most of the set up of GBoard.

What I don't like is the Google part of GBoard.
The snooping, the spying, that sort of thing.

So I opt to find keyboards that have no internet access and are efficient.

I have two that I use, and modern Android makes it simple to switch between them.

My favorite is very similar to GBoard in how it is set up.
It is called Simple Keyboard.

Simple Keyboard (Simply keyboard and nothing more) - https://f-droid.org/app/rkr.simplekeyboard.inputmethod

The other one that I use is more elaborate, yet is still small and simple.
It is called Hacker's Keyboard.

Hacker's Keyboard (Four- or five-row soft-keyboard) - https://f-droid.org/app/org.pocketworkstation.pckeyboard

There is one more that I used to use, and it is called BeHe Keyboard.
It has different options than the other two.

BeHe Keyboard (Hacking & programming keyboard with material design) - https://f-droid.org/app/com.vlath.keyboard

All three are small enough to have on a single device- to use for different modes (portrait/landscape) and other reasons.

I tend to not use emojis much at all.
I have an app called Telegram, that lets you use emojis even if your keyboard does not have them (none of mine do).

Since I am rather sarcastic by nature, the only emoji that I use often is the 'poop' emoji, and Telegram even has some animated poop emojis that I find amusing.

If I remember correctly, you go into GBoard settings and allow the emoji key to be on the keyboard instead of being hidden.

It appears as a smiley face key, somewhere on the lower row, I think.

Entering GBoard settings can be a bit tricky, as in the older Android OS the icon did not even appear in the app drawer unless you allowed it to.

To do this, you had to go into

Settings
Language & Input
GBoard

and then find Show Icon In App Drawer (or similar)

Then you could open your app drawer and an icon for GBoard was there to open the keyboard settings.

As I understand it, newer versions of Android do not hide icons for apps with the default launcher.
But there may still be an exception for GBoard, I do not know because I am still playing with Android 7 and 8.
