Tiny, these are good reasons to root. In fact, they are the exact reasons I originally rooted. The root will not wipe data on your phone, only flashing on a new ROM will.

im backing everyhting up right now with titanium backup and so if something goes wrong, what do i do to retsore it? do i just copy and paste everything and were?
I alwys get a red explamation point. If you're using Titanium back up it means you have Root. If you have root, then a nandriod back up will take care of everything for you. All you have to do is go to your recovery, choose the option that says Nand Backup or something similar and then let it do it's thing. Once it's done you will have a folder on your SD called Nandroid. This back up will restore the exact point in your phone that you took it at. If you flash a ROM and decide you don't like it, just do the nandroid restore and your phone will be exactly back to where it was when you created your Nandroid backup. Titanium is good for backing up apps, especially their data, that you want to carry over to your new ROM.

its ok, i've seen other people post this problem but i just cant seem to find those posts becuase i think there is a way to fix it.Hmmm....I don't know what to tell you then. I'm still fairly new to Android myself. Sorry.
Awesome! Just did the process and it went flawlessly. Thanks to everyone who was involved to make this happen. Now to flash fresh 2.1.2, should i do a wipe before i flash it even if i'm already on 2.1?
As per instructions from the XDA page...
OPTIONAL (but recommended):
To disable OTA updates (after rooting) that might patch this exploit, run the following commands from Command Prompt.
cd\
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb remount
adb shell
mv /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip.bak
This will prevent the OTA auto-updating...
It's on the first page of the Root Instructions.
I was just wondering...
With all this talk of OTA updates... If I had already rooted and installed Fresh ROM 2.1.2 before these updates were pushed, is it still necessary to disable the OTA updates?
Hey all, I've been a long time lurker of this site, you all are a wealth of knowledge which is why my first post is a problem. I just rooted using the one click method stated on page 2. When I tried to boot into recovery mode, I got a phone with a red triangle with an exclamation point....now I hit home/power again and got into another menu. The error on the bottom shows "E: can't open/cache/recovery/command" I did search and found that someone had this issue back in December, but was never resolved. Thanks in advance!

sorry, forgot to mention, official 2.1 without OTA update. Menu does say android system recovery....no option for nandroid back up, which is what I'm trying to accomplish.

Welcome to the site!
I am not familiar with the 1 click method for 2.1 yet. You might try doing it manually if you are having issues.
If you can bot into recovery, you may not see it say "nandroid backup" but instead something like backup/restore. In that menu there should be nandroid backup
Hello and Welcome!
As far as I know, if you have the OTA update installed on the Stock 2.1, you cannot root it (as of right now). There was talk of running the 2.27.651.5 RUU and seeing if you can then root it, but I am not sure if that has been successful yet.
