2.1 rooted!

i tried it but it wont back up my stuff:(
im backing everyhting up right now with titanium backup and so if something goes wrong, what do i do to retsore it? do i just copy and paste everything and were?

If you're using Titanium back up it means you have Root. If you have root, then a nandriod back up will take care of everything for you. All you have to do is go to your recovery, choose the option that says Nand Backup or something similar and then let it do it's thing. Once it's done you will have a folder on your SD called Nandroid. This back up will restore the exact point in your phone that you took it at. If you flash a ROM and decide you don't like it, just do the nandroid restore and your phone will be exactly back to where it was when you created your Nandroid backup. Titanium is good for backing up apps, especially their data, that you want to carry over to your new ROM.

Hey everyone,

Thanks so much for your help and patience. I was able to revert back to the 2.27.651.5 release and then root the phone. I finally got rid of those awful applications and it seems like my phone runs much smoother and loads way faster. I couldn't be happier. For now that's it for me messing around with the phone as I'm very pleased with the outcome. Thanks again for helping me out so much!

Just wanted to drop a line in here and say thanks to Kelmar for helping me with a few steps I got confused on while rooting.

I am now rooted, although all I have done so far was remove the sprint apps, except sprint TV and nascar.

Looking through the Roms now and trying to decide if I wanna try one ^^

Thanks again

Awesome! Just did the process and it went flawlessly. Thanks to everyone who was involved to make this happen. Now to flash fresh 2.1.2, should i do a wipe before i flash it even if i'm already on 2.1?

You may wanna research it, I haven't flashed a rom yet myself and I just rooted for the first time but...I think everything I read says you have to wipe first.

Again, may wanna check more yourself because I definitely can't say for sure.

As per instructions from the XDA page...

OPTIONAL (but recommended):

To disable OTA updates (after rooting) that might patch this exploit, run the following commands from Command Prompt.

cd\

cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

adb remount

adb shell

mv /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip.bak

This will prevent the OTA auto-updating...

It's on the first page of the Root Instructions.

I was just wondering...

With all this talk of OTA updates... If I had already rooted and installed Fresh ROM 2.1.2 before these updates were pushed, is it still necessary to disable the OTA updates?

Nope, I'm not 100% sure about how the phones know to receive the OTA updates (probably uses getprop or something), but you won't get them unless you are running the stock 2.27.651.5 update :)

What do I do if my phone automatically updated the OTA update? Whenever I try to follow the steps, teh Superuser Permission App doesn't come up. I was having trouble with a backup and now I am SOL. Is there a way to root my phone or is it impossible now? I don't see the backup that I made when I first rooted the phone.

In the main menu or the Recovery Screen, you will see an option that says

Code:
Backup/Restore
Choose that option, and then choose the option
Code:
Nand backup
This can take up to 5 minutes, so be patient while you see the
Code:
............
Once done, a nandroid backup of your phone will be created and saved to your sdcard in the folder directory:
Code:
/sdcard/nandroid/(your serial number)/
When it is complete, hit the back button to return to the Main menu, and hit "Reboot system now" from the menu to reboot normally!

I did this when I was first rooting my phone. How do I restore that image? I found the backup files on my sdcard. How do I restore the image?

Hey all, I've been a long time lurker of this site, you all are a wealth of knowledge which is why my first post is a problem. I just rooted using the one click method stated on page 2. When I tried to boot into recovery mode, I got a phone with a red triangle with an exclamation point....now I hit home/power again and got into another menu. The error on the bottom shows "E: can't open/cache/recovery/command" I did search and found that someone had this issue back in December, but was never resolved. Thanks in advance!

SNOW

sorry, forgot to mention, official 2.1 without OTA update. Menu does say android system recovery....no option for nandroid back up, which is what I'm trying to accomplish.

Welcome to the site!

I am not familiar with the 1 click method for 2.1 yet. You might try doing it manually if you are having issues.

If you can bot into recovery, you may not see it say "nandroid backup" but instead something like backup/restore. In that menu there should be nandroid backup

Hello and Welcome!

As far as I know, if you have the OTA update installed on the Stock 2.1, you cannot root it (as of right now). There was talk of running the 2.27.651.5 RUU and seeing if you can then root it, but I am not sure if that has been successful yet.
