A few Desire questions.

I've just upgraded from my E71 to the Desire & when I put my sim card in, there are sms messages on it. The Desire keeps telling me my sim is full. How do I transfer those sms messages to the memory card, without deleting them?

Also how do I add contacts from my sim to the favorites section on the Home page?

Stupidly complicated plan:

Make a Nokia backup with the PC software.

Delete half the messages, save the other half to the SIM card, import on Desire.

Restore messages on nokia phone, put SIM back.

Delete other half, save latter half to SIM, import on desire.

Favourites: Long press on contact, option should appear.

Sorry, I didn't explain properly. The sms messages are already on the Desire, I just can't move/copy them onto the phone/SD card. I've tried batching them together, but it gives me no option to move them?

From the messages app, settings>manage SIM card messages and you should get the options via the menu button

I've just switched to Chompsms & whenever I get a text, the notification sound goes off twice, one for the Desire sms app & Chmopsms, even though Chompsms is my default sms app. How do I get the notification sound to go off once, for Chompsms?

Turn the notification you don't want off in the settings of that app.

if you want chompsms, as your default then go to the MESSAGES app (the one that came with the deisre)and go to settings,notifications, and untick, then chompsms will notify you, no duplicate notifications.
