Bad ESN Phone Question

I am looking on Craigslist, and this person posted a Droid X for $50 but with a bad ESN. The only thing I want to do with this phone is root/install ROMs & browse internet via WiFi. Would it be safe to buy?

Could be stolen. You don't want to be part of that.

Or could come from a neglected contract, in which case, how conscientious an owner was it?

Bad ESN is always a red flag on a buy. ;) :)
