The problem here is not the universal ADB driver but getting Windows to install the MTP driver for the N5. I tried a bunch of different things. Finally, I went to update driver and asked for Windows to give me a list of all drivers. It offered the ADB driver of course, but it also offered a driver called something like "composite device" driver. Nothing else had worked, so I clicked on it and let it install. It finally gave me the Nexus 5 with a yellow triangle in the Device Manager. When I did update driver for that, it finally offered me the MTP driver and all has worked since. YMMV
