My Nexus was already rooted and this morning when I turned on my phone I got a message from the CyanogenMod auto updater warning me of a update the Rom..Did the update while at work and was painless as can be..it pretty much did everything by itself, only thing I had to do was click on okay for it to reboot.
It warned me of doing a backup..but I decided not to because I was at work and couldn't so just went with it and was surpised to see that it saved all my apps and everything when the update was finished.
To use this though you need root access. And of course..the CyanogenMod rom.
To download the auto updater search the market for CyanogenMod Updater (its free)
