When I click on software update under settings, it says "DM initialisation is not ready. Check simcard or network.... what does that mean?

I'm pretty sure it means you're rooted.

I'm definitely not rooted I just bought the phone a couple of days ago and haven't done anything to it.

I got this error as well. Reboot the phone and disable your task manager (you probably installed one). Once the task manager doesn't close the required process it should work fine...

I had run Advanced Task Cleaner Pro and chose "Exclude Ignore List Tasks." So after reboot everything was a-okay again :)

Task killers are often the root of problems. They are almost always used inappropriately. This is why they are advised against. Please see the Captivate FAQ:

I'm just wondering when the Android 2.2 comes out, will I get a notification on my phone to upgrade? I just got rid of my task killer and downloaded the system panel.

Probably, but until it's actually released we won't know for certain. I've seen some major updates for other phones not notify the user automatically and require manual install to obtain.

My recent experience with the Motorola Backflip, bringing it from Android 1.5 to 2.1 comes to mind. There was no notification... I had to learn about it online, download a 100MB file using a PC, place it on a MicroSD card, then manually do an update check with this card placed in the phone.
