I understand that I am supposed to do a 'factory reset' to then be able to use a different GMail account. I was wanting to know, what I would lose if I do a factory reset? Would I lose my apps? pictures? Contacts?

I am quite happy to shift my pictures/vids onto my SD Card, I am more concerned about losing all my apps and contacts

    Please advise?

You would lose your apps, and need to download them again. I think if you purchased any, because they were under a different Google account, you might have issues getting them back.

Picture are stored on the SD card so should be ok. To be safe, I'd copy them onto your PC to be safe. Contacts, if they are Google contacts, will be safe on the web. If they're phone contacts, use HTC Sync to sync with Outlook Express. Then reset your Hero, and sync your contacts back down to it. :)

    Thanks,

If I have my contacts as 'google contacts', wont they go when I change my Google Account to a different one?

This is pretty poor by HTC, there should be a tool to change the GMail Account

Out of interest, when you do the update, do you get prompted to select a new GMail account aswell? As I could tie the two together.

    Cheers

Yeah, your contacts will still be in your old account, but you can easily export them to your PC and then import them to your new Google account, all online.

Pretty poor? It's absolute wank and typical of the kind of crap we're all being fed by products being rushed to market. Someone must have come across this issue in testing, and someone made a decision to 'Ah feck it, feck the users, just send it out'.

If you do the update, you will essentially be carrying out a hard reset and therefore get the chance to enter new Google account details. :)

Looks like there's a way of sorting this without the need for a reset.

Firstly you need to press - Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Google Apps > "Clear data" > OK.

This will delete the Google account details on your mobile.

To enter new details press - Settings > Data Synchronization > Google and you'll be prompted with the set up dialogue. Enter your new account details and all should be good again :D

Full credit to Dr Hotdog for this.

It would be nice to able to flick from one account to another cause many of us have more then one account but spose that would be too complicated for them.

I've just changed to a different gmail account and would like to know - has anyone tried this method and does it work? I'd rather get confirmation before I try and potentially fail! Thanks :)

Great piece of advice. Now the big question - can you switch back and forth manually between 2 accounts with this method?

Confirmed on the Euro HTC Hero as well. Needed to change from one gmail account to the other.
The above directions work great. Manage the google apps and clear the data.

I dont understand how it's poor. The one major stumbling block is Market. If you had paid apps on your phone and wanted to change your email address what would happen to the apps? Obviously the new email address hasn't paid for them so they shouldnt be allowed to be used, otherwise one person could buy all apps from Market and then just share around that email address to everyone so they could use the apps.

Thanks again Cheggs, I had read about this method on another forum, but thought that I would lose info on my phone, turns out I didn't, worked flawlessly for me.

This is a feature that is already in Android 2.0.

Here is one more way to remove your Gmail or Facebook account from the phone.

    1. Settings > Accounts & Sync
    2. There is a manage accounts at the bottom. Click on whichever account you want to remove from the phone.
    3. There will will be a Remove Account button which appears at the bottom. Click on that.
    4. You are done! :)

    This isn't working for me.

I have done as suggested, and have put the new account into Gmail.

Whilst the GMail is working fine, Apps Market won't work at all with any settings, old or new??

What can I do - is there another setting i need to change to get the phone to connect to the Apps market again?

Otherwise - I can do a hard-reset, that's easy as is getting my calendar and contacts back in the phone - but I am gonna lose my Apps - and I've paid for some. Is there somewhere in the phone I can copy the apps to a SD card and then copy them back after the hard reset?

With my HTC Hero from Credo Mobile, when I followed the instructions above, there is no "Clear Data" in "Google Apps", even after I did "Force Stop".

So, I tried "Gmail" and "Clear Data" was there, which responds with:

All of this application's data will be deleted permanently. This includes all files, settings, ACCOUNTS, databases and so on.

I thought "perfect!" and did it. Indeed the "Data" changed to "0.00B" used. Yay!

However, when I go back into the Gmail application (even after completely shutting the phone off after above "Clear Data" is performed), it displays "Waiting for sync" at the top and then prompts me to enter a Captcha for my original Gmail account! ARGH! It still remembers that stupid first account I entered which was just a "test" account. And it apparently won't let me delete or add an account until I sign in with the old account.

I even tried doing "Clear Data" on "Gmail Storage" (which gives the same warning as above) to no avail.

They should WARN users that THIS account will NOT be easily removable... EVER!

I've installed and configured tons of stuff that will be completely lost if I do a full factory reset.

    Extremely lame!

Anyone else had success at this on a Hero? Particularly one from Credo?

No idea if it is different on Desire, but on Hero (with 1.5), this method plain didn't work for me, and from the look of the thread, lots of others too.

I've just tried this myself and when I go to sign in to get the new one on, I get a message everytime that says
    Where it says
what does that actually mean? I am on the web, the wifi is on, my service provider will let me online because I use my browser alot!

I've tried turning the phone off and on, also turned wifi off and on and still no difference. Any ideas?

    Thanks!
