If you are a business user like me, then you probably need your phone to sound EVERY time you get a new email, not just at the first unread message. This has been so frustrating since I purchased the Droid, and a quick google search showed that this is a problem many have but google was not exactly rushing to fix!
Issue 4190 - android - Gmail Notifications Bug? - Project Hosting on Google Code

I stumbled upon Gmail Notifier (free) in the android market a couple of days ago, and it fixes the problem! Plus, it has has multi-account support and custom options regarding LED color, vibration length, etc. And it does not run in the background, so no decreased battery life, etc.

The original version did not have support for multiple accounts, but I sent a quick email to the Dev and he fixed it in the new update that came today!

I'm using it in conjunction with Gmail Unread Count widgets, and finally the email on my Droid is up to par with (well, actually better than) my old blackberry!

I just installed the update today also. It is fantastic now. This is the way the stock gmail app should have been. Anyway, nice fix. One thing I wanted to confirm: on installation of the app, I enable notifications in Gmail Notifier and disable them in the stock Gmail app. Is this correct?

By the way, here's the link to the developer's page in case you're more curious.

This is what i did...i disabled all notifications in the gmail settings and just used the app to set everything I wanted.

Working great after a day of use. The LED colors are a nice bonus :).

I realize this has support for multiple gmail accounts, but you can only set it to notify you for ONE account, not all of them, correct? I installed it a few days ago and when I went into the settings, it asked me which gmail account I wanted notifications for. Kind of a bummer if it can't give me notifications for all of them at once.

I just downloaded it and set up 2 accounts on my Incredible. The notifications work for both but it doesn't seem to work w/ my SMS message counter. The stock gmail icon didn't show the number of messages I had like the SMS message counter. It has a gmail icon but tells me in the upper right hand corner of the icon how many unread messages I had in there before I even opened the inbox. hmm....

Incorrect. It's asking you which one you want to set up. Pick one, change the settings, and you can go back and pick a different one to configure. I currently have Gmail Notifier giving me notifications for my personal Gmail account and my Google Apps account from work - with different notification icon, sound, and LED color for each. I've also got it set up to re-notify me for my work emails in case I miss the initial notification for whatever reason.

    Atmis,

I was down to one last tweak to get my Droid X working perfectly. It was the notification of Gmail. Your post was it. Thanks!

Got the same issue here also - using Galaxy Sii X. Every app I download that claims it fixes the issue, in reality, doesn't. :(

Anyone found a fix for this?

I know this is an old thread, but how would you go about getting the gmail icon to display the number of unread emails? That's the only thing I can't seem to figure out and go launcher's notifier didn't work and I don't think adw has that option for gmail either. Any ideas?

Google's Gmail update broke all third-party applications.

Check this out: Gmail Notification Fix.

    Hope this helps!

I personally wouldn't even try it - not worth the frustration. I personally use K9 Mail and use my Gmail through it. Works great.

I have "Gmail Notifier" installed, but it does not appear to be in the Market anymore. I'm having major issues with it since my RAZR MAXX was upgraded to ICS.

It's still in the Play Store (here), but it says it's broken since Gmail 2.3.5.

While there were a couple features in it I'd like to get back (repeat notifications, different notification icons per account), in truth I don't really miss it.
