Root [GUIDE] Unbrick OR Unroot LG Motion 4G [KDZ]

Its interesting as reflashing a rom in the past has always meant wiping the data directory. I will still do a backup anyhow. Thanks again for the info.

When I flash the firmware it still has all my settings and everything.. It's like it didn't really do anything.. I still have the same issue of phone rebooting randomly and sometimes rebooting 20 times in a row before it stops and then randomly will do it again.. should I just return the phone? I think something is majorly wrong with it

Try flashing the d firmware, if it persists, get a new phone.

I just got a new LG Motion, and before rooting and before updating the system, I clocked the CPU at 1.5Ghz. Very interesting

Problem still exists. I believe it started when I deleted some metropcs apps and it must be trying to start them when they dont exist.

They still don't exist after flashing? Hmm that's weird...last thing to try is a factory reset. If there's still a problem, get a new phone.

@Rynet
Did you use the automated bloatware removal tool? If so, you are probably experiencing the same problem as this guy: http://androidforums.com/motion-4g-all-things-root/653186-buggy.html

Even if you didn't use that tool, you could still be having the same problem. If you could find out which removed apps are causing the problems, then that would really help the rest of us out.

I don't remember off the top of my head but I just performed a factory reset and still had issues with UI crashing and rebooting. Such and such, but during this I managed to root it between it rebooting itself and then installed the CPU limiter and it crashed once again but once it came back on with the cpu limiter at 1.1ghz it is stable. Odd.

@Rynet
Oh that sucks. If I couldn't get the minimum 1.2Ghz, I would try like heck to return the device. It's defective.

I'm just happy to have a working phone now though... Got tired of it rebooting. And it'd wipe my contacts and text messages..

I would factory reset, reflash, factory reset again in this order without doing anything else. Afterwards uninstall what you dont like, disable what cant be uninstalled and test that out. Dont root it or tamper with the cpu or restore old settings. As theres no cwm formatting the drives isnt possible via the recovery manager. I doubt your phone is faulty.

The thing is when I factory reset it, the UI and core processes fail and it's hell to even get it fully operational. Even then it still crashes out. Only thing that has solved it for me is cpu limiting it to 1.1ghz.

Yeah, I think pedro1977 is right. Rynet is changing to many variables at a time and not being clear about what happens at each step.

Does the problem occur after reflashing and resetting and leaving your phone unrooted? Only then can you know for sure if you have a defective phone. Backup all your info stuff with free Go Backup Pro. Unlike most other apps, it will backup MMS also.

Yup im having difficulty gauging the situation i would after backing up flash the newer stock rom first, then factory reset it on first boot, i think its power/ down button let go and keep pressing back arrow. He wasnt clear if this problem came with the phone. This is why i dont like rooting until there is cwm available, much easier to solve. If that fails do it again with the older rom of the two. If they have half a brain, they may not take the phone. Good luck

I had the problem 1-2 weeks after I bought the phone without rooting and without flashing any firmware. It would randomly restart, sometimes many times in a row. (I removed some metroPCS apps) I then found this forum and flashed each firmware and still had the same issue. It wasn't until I rooted it and cpu limited it to 1.1ghz that the problem went away.

@Rynet
Well if that's all true, then I think we can be a lot more certain that your phone is defective. Though, out of curiosity, will it run ok at 1.2Ghz?

Yea, I recommend getting a new one. It had problems since the beginning. The processor must be bad, there could be a whole batch of bad phones out there for all we know.

This is most likely a clock frequency problem. This cpus primary core is scorpion not krait (as with lg regard) and will therefore only run 1.2/1.5ghz, only the second core will run in off/ 384-1.5ghz modes/ frequency. I dont know how you have inadvertantly got it down to 1.1ghz, but if you factory reset after a flash before first boot the problem may resolve. If you leave your old apps/ settings they may resssert themselves on reboot, root or otherwise.

The message is clear on this device, do not alter the cpu frequency of this device. If youre doing it for performance issues install the update. I have noticed a significant drop in load on the cpu since the update without any change in clock speed. Either through removing dud apps or improving cpu management.

If youre doing it to save power think again. If you lower the clock speed the second core will only open up more frequently using more power. Performance will degrade too with a clock downgrade and is probably why they clocked it up. If you want to save power keep your color rich ips screen off as much as possible as this is the devices principal power guzzler.

I'm curious where you got this information. According to LG website, the chipset is MSM8960L. But I could not find the MSM8960L chipset anywhere on the qualcomm website

According to internal readings, both cores are capable of scaling all the way down to 384Mhz

[HIGH]# echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online # Turn on cpu1
# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies
384000 486000 594000 702000 810000 918000 1026000 1134000 1242000 1350000 1458000 1512000
# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies
384000 486000 594000 702000 810000 918000 1026000 1134000 1242000 1350000 1458000 1512000
# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
1512000
[/HIGH]Then I used No-Frills CPU Control to set it to 384Mhz, and checked with the kernel. Both correctly set.
[HIGH]# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
384000
# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
384000
[/HIGH]

Thanks alot guys!! this saved my butt! However after flashing the new firmware to my phone, some of the functions of it arent working properly now. The camera is a completely black screen, and also any application that uses the camera doesn't work alos. Like the video chat, camcorder etc. Also my google chrome stopped working too, dont know if thats related buti wasnt too worried about it because i use a different browser anyways. Theres just a couple little issues im trying to get some help with so if someone knows anything or has any advice thatd b kool. !!!!Also, if u have a lg motion 4g and your phone is rooted...DO NOT DOWNLOAD BEATS AUDIO *ROOT...IT WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!! thanks

@kykybc14
Big thanks for the heads up on BEATS AUDIO *ROOT bricking your phone. It might be better if you start a new thread on your problem. Perhaps try reflashing the second firmware.

See post 78 may be something to do with the root or something done after the root.
