Root Has anybody rooted using this tool?

Before you start, make sure your contacts are google contacts, open your gmail account via a PC, then select Contacts. You should see a list of the numbers on your phone. If not, this will import your contacts into google. Your apps etc will have been backed up with Titanium.

Download Links
Update-cm-7.1.0-DesireHD-signed
gapps-gb-20110828-signed (It's the top link in the table)
LorDmod Kernel (For the sake of simplicity, just take the Cyanogen, CFS Kernel, file name: lordmodUEvX.X-CFS.zip)

This looks a lot by the way, but it's pretty straightforward.

1. Open Titanium, hit Menu -> More -> Create Update.zip
2. You want Edify, User Application & Call it Titanium XXX.zip, then hit create
3. Place the main the on the root of your SD Card.
4. Place the LordmodUE zip attachment on the root of your SD Card.
5. Open ROM Manager, look at the top option, if the current recovery isn't ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0, hit Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery. If you get a prompt to chose your handset, it should hopefully be an easy choice :p. Let it do its thing.
6. Still in ROM Manager, press "Reboot into Recovery", after a 30 seconds or so, your phone will boot into clockwork.
7. You'll need to use the Volume Keys to navigate the different menus, and the power button to select, scroll down to Backup & Restore and take a backup of your current ROM (I cannot stress how important this is). It may take anything up to 10 minutes.
8. Once completed, head to the "Mounts and Storage" menu and from there, individually format the system, data & cache partitions. You'll need to confirm each one which can be annoying, but it will hopefully stop mistakes. Don't format the boot partition. Don't reboot.
9. Head back into the main menu in clockwork and select Wipe Data/Factory Reset (Again, you'll need to confirm).
10. Once completed, select "Install Zip from SD Card"
11. Scroll down to the update-cm-7.1.0-RC1-DesireHD zip and select, again confirm. This will install CM7 on your device.
12. Once complete, head back to the main menu, then select "Install Zip from SD Card" again, this time selecting the gapps-gb-20110828 zip.
13. Once that's done, select install from SD Card again and select the TB update zip you created at the start of the process.
14. Once finished, head back into the main menu, select "Reboot Now". First boot might take somewhere in the region of 10 minutes. If you get stuck on the loading animation for longer than that, pull the battery, then head back into CWM by powering the handset back on whilst holding volume down, then selecting Recovery in HBOOT. You can either try the above again, or restore the backup you made and start from step 6.
15. If it boots properly, read Xyro's post below to see about the skipping google sign in etc.
Disclaimer: I'm slightly hazy on this side of the process as it's been a while since I've done it. It might be easier if you just sign into the google account now, let the apps reinstall themselves, then restore the data with TB. If anyone reading this wants to confirm what I'm typing is correct, feel free. :)
16. Titanium should have appeared in your app drawer, Open it, hit menu, batch, "Restore All apps with Data". You'll be presented with a list of apps you previously had installed on the handset, deselect anything that looks like it was remotely related to HTC/Sense and don't restore it. To be sure you don't, see Xyro's post below. Let it run its course, it might take a while.
17. Once finished, sign in to your gmail account and access the market, if you see your apps in the My Apps section, good. If not, head back into Titanium, then hit menu, market tools, market doctor. Select all the apps you believe you've downloaded via the market, then hit "restore market links"
The next steps are optional, you're flashing a new kernel. I find what you're about to flash gives you pretty good battery/performance improvements over the standard CM7 kernel though so it's worth it
18. Once you're confident all your apps are restored, open the app drawer, then ROM Manager. Ensure the current recovery is still 5.0.2.0, then reboot in to clockwork.
19. Take another backup, then select "Install Zip from SD Card" and select the lordmodUEvX.X-CFS.zip file. Once done reboot.
20. Download Battery Calibration. Charge your phone for at least an hour after it reports it's at 100% then open the Calibration app. If it reports the current charge as 4200mV, hit calibrate, then unplug. Do not recharge again until the battery is fully depleted.

That's it! :D

It looks a lot, but it's not really and shouldn't take more than half an hour. If it doesn't make sense (It might not, I am mega tired), or you get stuck, post and someone will be able to assist/correct me.

Getting the bug for this rooting thing now and fancy trying out another ROM. Would these instructions do for any other ROM i would like to try?
Cheers

Essentially yeah. Just check the specific instructions for that particular ROM beforehand, just to be safe. Replace the cyanogen zip with the zip of the rom you want. You won't need the gapps zip for other ROMs though. The kernel won't work for any other ROM either.

What you thinking of going for?

Was thinking about maybe LeeDroid or anthing in the coming week/months that is ICS based.

Take it i can keep Cyanogen7 and the gapps zip on the SD card in case i fancy firing them back on?

Personally, I'd hold off on LeeDroid for the moment. It's not been updated in a while and he's moving house (or something like that) so he's not had much time to iron out any bugs there might be in his latest release.

ARHD is a popular Sense ROM and RCMix3D seems pretty decent too.

I'm itching for an ICS ROM too, I think we'll be waiting until at least December for those though. :(

Apparently the source is going to be released 'soon', but not before the ICS phones start to ship.

We'll no doubt see some ports from ICS phones done first, but they tend to be pretty awful. Even the 'best' ports don't come close to ones built from source.

Cheers mate, quite like the look of the AHRD ROM, and the install instruction seem pretty simple:D

No probs chief.

You won't need to bother with the data, cache and system partition wipes if you install ARHD, the super wipe looks to wipe all the relevant partitions for you.

Cheers. Will download the ROM and Radio he reccomends tonight, 1 question. What is "Remember to check MD5 Checksum before flashing !!!"

It's basically a way to ensure the download isn't corrupt. Every file has a md5sum associated with it. But if the file changes in any way at all, the md5sum will be completely different.

I forget where I downloaded my md5sum checker from now...

I normally use this one simply because it's the first one that comes up when I google. :p

Murzz, if you're going to flash a new radio, it's potentially very risky, but pretty easy. There's a little bit more info here. Just be sure and read the guide thoroughly and you've got a decent charge on your phone when you do it. This is the guide I normally use: How to flash a radio.

Also, the checksum is for the radio.img file, not the zip file.

I'll maybe leave the radio flashing and see how it goes. Off to download the ROM and figure out how to check my sums:rolleyes:

Keeps saying the codes do not match, im doing something wrong i know, but cant figure it out even after reading the instructions Doh:confused:

I'm guessing you need to copy the checksum (from the download page) and paste it into the top box, rather than the URL of the download.

The checksum is in the instructions which i have copied into the top box
but then im stuck, itt seems so simple but i cant get it to work its getting me :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

First, place the given MD5 checksum on the Clipboard (Ctrl C or Edit...Copy)

Run the MD5 Check Utility (MD5.Exe) and this should automatically place the contents of the Clipboard in for you (Paste option). If not, please ensure that you have correctly copied the checksum to the Clipboard, and then click on the Paste button. You can also use the Paste facility for checking more than one MD5 checksum without the need to re-run MD5.Exe (simply copy the next desired checksum to the Clipboard and take the Paste option to refresh the box...then the Browse option).

Browse to where your download is and select it by either double left-mouse clicking on it or by highlighting it and taking the 'Open' option.

You may also create your own MD5 checksum(s) if required (for example, to check that a backup file is identical to the original etc.)...just click on the 'Create an MD5 checksum' option (Radio button), and Browse to the required file (and again, select it as per the instructions above) . The result will be automatically placed on the Clipboard for you and an offer to run Windows Notepad is made so that, if you want to, you can Paste (Ctrl+V) the MD5 Code into Notepad and save the result.

MD5 Checker is a completely 'standalone' program that requires no other files (.NET, dll's etc.) to clutter-up your system.

Also, no installation is required - just unzip md5.exe and run it!

Some random thoughts on our new FREE MD5 Checker utility....

It's FREE

No attempt has been made to make this thing pretty (eye candy)

Has been tested on a 2GB+ file with success

It is a simple utility to provide a simple answer: What is/will be the MD5 checksum

Yes, we know it's limitations, and we may attempt a full-blown version with 'full-on' capabilities (unlikely though)

It does not contain the level of sophistication of our Flagship program MidWavi Pro

It's FREE (not to mention it's a tiny full Windows program)

It's FREE!!!

MD5 checksum for MD5.Exe: E5A1A4A431C25A1D8B2428066487FC45

Feel a right @rse that i can figure it out
