Root How to install ICARUS 1.1 by Isaacj87

I'm going to preface that this can be device specific, so any Ascend chipheads with superior info, feel free to correct me.

1. I use an earlier ClockworkMod Recovery - it has boot-screen options to clear data and dalvik cache. Some have found on occasion that wiping those areas more than once can be beneficial, as earlier versions are claimed to not be 100% effective.

2. It's been determined that many phones' built-in factory/hard reset will do that job quite effectively. A number of us pitched in and worked that out.

3. Because you'll lose your programs and data on a clear of either type, we chipped in and worked out this procedure to backup, clear, and restore - it's good for any Android level - http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-support-troubleshooting/141369-how-fix-froyo.html

4. I noted with interest a few days ago that you cats have a thread for that here - I've not checked it out (Yet!) but I was way encouraged to see it. So - if you have a community-supported method to do the job and it's known to work, probably best to stick with that. I'd presume when I look that may include this program you're referring to.

5. All number of ills for Android phones can be traced to tangled cache/data areas, especially force-closes and things being non-operational.

6. People like to avoid the hard cure because it's a little extra work but there's really no substitute for it.

7. Untangling bad cache/data benefits stock, rooted and custom rom phones alike.

8. This is an Android-wide issue. Some day we hope that they figure out the right bits to clear - but until then, we do invasive rather than precision surgery, and just clear it all out.

Because I always follow rom changes with a factory reset to clear, I don't bother with ROM Manager, I do recovery and rom installs by hand.

Last I heard, when you check the box in ROM Manager to clear cache and data, all it really does is look for a script in the new rom to do that job - if the script is using updated language semantics for that, or if the script doesn't exist - your cache/data areas never really get cleaned. That may have changed since I last looked, but I'm just warning that it was that way as of a few months ago.

Hope this helps, and don't execute my factory reset advice unless it's already known that you can do that without bricking your phone (earlier Droid X users got way unhappy way fast finding that one out).

Ok I'm currently using a 2g sd card and just ordered a 16g card is there anyway to copy the contents from both partitions onto the new card or am I going to have to do something drastic like download all my apps again?

Is the Metro able to be used on cricket with Icarus, I'd like to switch but not have to buy a new phone.

I really need this ROM. My phone is full and I have an 8 SD card. I can do a lot with phones I'm just terrified I might brick my phone. If there is anybody in NC that has successfully installed this Icarus ROM 1.1 and everything is working properly can you PM me so I can see if your in my area? I need all the help I can get!!!

First off, I did also post this over at myascend.org, but really wanted to drop it here too, as I've really been getting nice replys here from some great people:

This one to me is quite bizarre, as I havn't a clue why it would act ths way, I'll try to be brief and just the facts, avoid my tendency to babble:
1. Running ICARUS 1.1
2. NEVER had any issues wth any of the functionality: Wi-FI, SMS, MMS, GPS, etc. NO PROBLEMS.

Now, VERY often I write a txt message, exceed the character limit and it is changed into an MMS.

Now,here i the issue:
a. When I am out, 'on the road' whatever, using the 3G network. I hit send on this 'MMS' and it sends, that small clock indicating it's not yet "Sent" is there for at most a few seconds.

b. I'm Home, I have Wi-Fi turned on. I so the same, hit 'send', the 'clock' indicating that it's not sent yet sits there and sits and sits. Now, I have never left it sit there for more than 5 minutes or somethig and see if it will go eventually.

My solution for the time being (If I forget to just turn off Wi-FI to start):
1. Turn OFF WI-FI
2. Hold long on the message and click 'Forward"
3. Forward the message to the original recipient
4 Boom it sends within seconds- Sometimes I have time to delete one of the 2, otherwise, they just get 2 copies of my message.

THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN WHEN SENDING A STANDARD SMS, Only When it's converted to MMS.

Any thoughts or comments?? If there were a small setting I'm missing, that would be great.

To be honest. If this is the worst problem I have...GREAT, But, it's odd and it's a 'new' problem.

I don't recall it acting like this before (month or two ago), seems like it just started happening. I did to a 'reinstall' of Icarus, but this should have no impact. I hope somebody out there has some ideas..

Thank you for your time.....look forward to hear what anyone has to say...
Best regards,Jeff

Seriously....THANK YOU TO ALL YOU OUT THERE.....

Even with all of the problems everyone has had over the last couple pages, I think I am going to take my chances and give it a shot. What's the worst that could happen? I have to revert my phone back to its original state?

(Just wish Jazz or September were here in case I dont make it back):(

Yeah, I took down the link on my mediafire. Give me a sec and I'll put it back up.

EDIT: It should work now.

This is normal. You'll notice the 3G indicator goes away when turning on Wifi. In order for MMS to successfully send, data (3G) is needed (that's how they keep track of how many you use). They won't authenticate the sending of MMS over Wifi.

I thought I should add that Icarus is just a repackaged, tweaked version of Huawei's stock ROM. Any bugs relating to the original Huawei ROM are present here. I don't have the source for the ROM (hint hint, maybe someone should complain to them), so I can make any changes directly to the core of Android.

If I had the ROM source, it would be INCREDIBLY helpful.

Hmmm. Bummer! I thought under the terms of the open handset alliance they were required to release the non-proprietary portions of the source code... I think it doesn't specify WHEN tho. :(

So, so far you just have kernel source and Android AOSP, then. Tough row to hoe.

Yup. Basically, I assume every manufacturer starts with the kernel and AOSP. What would be helpful for me, is to have the configs to the makefiles necessary to build AOSP for this device. Huawei can release that, but hasn't. Even for newer versions of Android, it would be helpful to see where they started.

EDIT: Yes, you're correct. According to the GPL, if they used open-source code and modified it, they must RE-release those changes. Naughty Huawei.

OK, I will do it today!!!!
One quick question: do we need to reinstall apps that we used on rooted phone. apps like SetCPU, Juicedefender etc. Or we don't need them anymore?

Ok. I did it. I am now running Icarus 1.1.
I still have to test everything, but everything installed just fine.

Before I did anything, I copied the contents of my SD to my computer. I still need to transfer them back to my SD.

How do I get my apps back?

I just downloaded all my apps again using the Market place on my PC (it's easier that way).
